Overwhelmed Online Bible Study | Week 8

By | Overwhelmed | No Comments

Congratulations! We just finished our Summer 2017 online Bible study “Overwhelmed: How to Quiet the Chaos and Restore Your Sanity” by Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory! We had over 2,000 women join us this summer and we made some new friends and lifetime memories. We’d like to thank our amazing volunteer team led by Sonya Morris-Nelson. These leaders showed up week after week, prayed for each of you by name, and engaged in meaningful conversations. We were equally blessed by our students as they prayed for our leaders.

Now that you’ve finished the Overwhelmed book, I encourage you to read it again (and again). You’ve heard me say this before- I’ve read the book three times and each time I see the bigger picture pull together. What I mean is this: the manifesto may be lingering on your back burner of things to do. The plate exercise may be something you want to see visually, making your own plates and stacking the tasks under each role. Your project map may seem complicated the first time you attempt one, and then the second time a lightbulb goes off and you understand it. But if the book sits on a shelf, unopened and unloved, then soon your past will creep back into your planners and your overwhelm will reinfect your life once again. I challenge you NOT to let that happen.

Missionary Mom Stasia Nielsen shared this summary with us:

  1. Being organized helps keep you from being overwhelmed and frazzled.
  2. Planning helps you stay organized
  3. The enemy WANTS you feeling frazzled and feeling shame
  4. God has great grace for each of us.
  5. WE can make positive statements about ourselves and keep ourselves on tract.
  6. We do not have to feel as if we need to do it all.
  7. We can set aside our perfectionism.
  8. Resting is important
  9. Knowing personal triggers can help me manage my emotions and life better
  10. I need to affirm myself more, I am too hard on myself.

The common thread in her summary is CHOICE.

Another great discussion we’re having this week in our groups is the topic of Sabbath Rest. Procrastination gets in my way, as I pile tasks and then spend the Sabbath working on the pile so Monday has a fresh start. Because of this study, I made a choice towards intentional Sabbath rest. So my weekend task pile took half a day instead of a full day and I enjoyed a half-Sabbath. I am working myself up to a full 24 hours of intentional Sabbath rest.

We need to seek spiritual rest.. which is why Sabbath (any day of the week) is a blessing for us. Cease to be busy… once a week. If you feel that Sabbath = church and can’t break the childhood teaching, then get a podcast on and watch or listen for an hour before your Sabbath resting. Your CHOICE. What needs to happen for you to observe a Sabbath once a month? Twice a month? and eventually 4 times a month? Pray on that.

We don’t take a Sabbath because we are exhausted, or sick in bed.

We take a Sabbath because we planned one.

In the same way, some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable. Those who worship the Lord on a special day do it to honor him. Those who eat any kind of food do so to honor the Lord, since they give thanks to God before eating. And those who refuse to eat certain foods also want to please the Lord and give thanks to God. For we don’t live for ourselves or die for ourselves. If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Christ died and rose again for this very purpose—to be Lord both of the living and of the dead. Romans 14:5-9 NLT

All glory to God-

Overwhelmed Online Bible Study | Week 7

By | Overwhelmed | No Comments

We’re close to finishing “Overwhelmed: How to Quiet the Chaos and Restore Your Sanity” by Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory, our current online Bible study for women. This week you’ll receive an email invitation to join our next study- which begins on September 11th, 2017.

Something wonderful is happening as a result of this summer Bible study: lives are changing! I warned you that this book is a game changer for women who feel overwhelmed, and now we are seeing the fruits of our efforts. Here we are at week seven, with one more week to go, and I’m seeing MANY women implement fresh ideas. Cindy is taking sabbatical from 5PM Saturday night until 5PM Sunday evening.  Kerri is taking a long-term sabbatical to care for her disabled mother. Laura is practicing self-care. Many authors in our study are re-evaluating the weight and impact of criticism. Since I am no longer overwhelmed, I now have time to bake for my family and twice this week we enjoyed muffins for breakfast!

I took a 6-week sabbatical a few years ago. I deactivated my Facebook account, handed the ministry over to well-qualified leaders, and taught myself this is God’s ministry, never mine. In my absence I spent more time one-on-one with God. It was a true blessing and something I will repeat every few years.

Many pastors and church leaders negotiate sabbaticals as part of their contracts. Typically after 5 years of continued service, they receive a paid 6-week sabbatical. One of my friend’s working at Apple computers gets an 8-week sabbatical for his 10 years of employment. Many tech companies here in Silicon Valley offer pilgrimage sabbaticals to specific religions (paid) because their faith requires a long-travel.

A sabbatical should be 1) pre-negotiated with your boss or ministry team 2) pre-funded, so you start saving a little each month for the five preceding years 3) announced in advance to your coworkers 4) a commitment to stay away. If you are micromanaging then it’s a vacation, not a sabbatical.

Join a small group this week and learn plans for dealing with your critics. You’ll also learn to how to become Cheerleaders/ Safe People for family and friends and how to minimize Crisis Creators. Get in there any day of the week and join us!

A few years ago I made a resolution to find 12 new friends and build relationships with her “peeps.” Each month I invited a woman to a coffee date and we bonded over lattes. How do you build new friendships? Where do you meet women and how do you nurture your friendships?

Here’s the deal: if you are making friends of your will, you will struggle to wear the right clothes and say the right things. If you are making friends of God’s will- you can be a hot mess and mascara all over your face, and that’s true friendship. Get out there ladies.. get messy and find other Christian women. If you feel you are on stage or have to be perfect in front of a friend, she is not a friend. She’s an acquaintance.

If you can see yourself in a hospital bed with a mess on your face and in your hair- and feel comfortable having your friend see you this way- she is a true friend. Embrace friendships. Look for 12, then find one or two who really understand your need for transparency together. You are loved!

Overwhelmed Online Bible Study | Week 6

By | Overwhelmed | No Comments

Online Bible Study for women is a year-round event at the Womens Bible Cafe. It’s summer here in the United States and we’re currently working through a study called “Overwhelmed: How to Quiet the Chaos and Restore Your Sanity” by Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory. This is a road map for finding rest and joy in the middle of your busy life. As we tend to slow down in the summer months and enjoy more relaxation, we think it’s a good time to examine the Biblical aspects of time management.

If you’re in the discussion groups with us each week and reading the book, then you’re making progress and implementing systems. We’ve learned the importance of self-cafe and Biblical rest. We are given seven days in each week, and Kathi Lipp reminds us to work productively for six days and honor God by resting on the seventh.

“For many of us, Sabbath has become catch-up day.” Kathi Lipp

One system we’re implementing is called “prep and plan,” as we prepare for Sabbath by planning the days ahead of it. We’re pairing up responsibilities with rewards and finding that inner determination and motivation to “grow up.”  Cheri Gregory warns us, “Somehow we have this false notion that time spent on ourselves is a waste.” And we’re finding out in small groups this week- many of us are at that same place of revelation. It’s time to wise us as we rest up.

We created morning and evening routines and we’re not committed to stick to them. Instead of putting out fires because we missed a deadline or important task, we’re now ahead of the game and watching the bigger picture.

Last week Kathi Lipp created a Facebook Live video “Real Ways to Enjoy Real Rest”- if you missed it here’s a replay!

USEFUL TIPS for online Bible study

Encouragement: “Sometimes the solution doesn’t come until we rest. We get a new word or fresh perspective from God when we rest.” Kathi Lipp

  • If you have a negative mindset about routines, perhaps from a childhood experience or unhealthy relationship, write this down. Process where you adopted the idea that routines are boring, rigid, or “setting yourself up for failure.”
  • Some of you are hiding and not attending small groups, most likely because you’re behind on the reading or feel that sense of “all or nothing.” But ladies, missing a week or two online is not the same as a local church group. We EXPECT you to be flexible and absent and we’re a no-shame ministry. Life is busy, you’re overwhelmed, but please don’t miss the opportunity to grow in fellowship. Show up no matter where you are in the book- we promise to love and learn with you.
  • Companion Study Guides are optional for this summer study, so please don’t feel they must be completed and turned in for a grade. They are very helpful and take about 30 minutes once a week to complete.
  • If you miss a Facebook live, the videos are always available to watch anytime online. Find them on our page at http://facebook.com/WomensBibleCafe or on Cheri Gregory or Kathi Lipp’s Facebook page.

ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS WEEK

  • Pray before you begin, and also pray for our ministry leaders and the book authors. Pray for the women who are not showing up for small group discussions.
  • Read Chapter 13: “Just Don’t Take It Personally” vs Choosing Input to Invite and Feedback to Forget
  • Read Chapter 14: “Just Get Over Yourself” vs Dealing with Crisis Creators and Finding Your Peeps
  • Work on your prep and plan this week!

Overwhelmed Online Bible Study | Week 5

By | Overwhelmed | No Comments

Right now in Summer Bible Study we’re meeting women around the world through online discussion groups. We’ve been on a journey to move our calendars from chaos to calm. We’re reading“Overwhelmed: How to Quiet the Chaos and Restore the Sanity” by Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory. We’re now on week five and women are still joining us on the journey because it’s a game-changer! You can read the book with us as a group and join a discussion any day of the week, or you can read independently and discuss here on our website (or with local friends).

Even if you’re not one of the 2,000 women in our current study at the Womens Bible Cafe™ I want to encourage you to pick up this book and read it. Because the end result is that you’ll have more time for Sabbath rest and more time for personal Bible study. As you work through the PROCESS of self-discovery you’ll see priorities shift into primary calendar slots and unimportant tasks slide “off the plate.” You’ll learn how to manage your time-plate with a demitasse saucer, dinner plate, or turkey platter.

Personally, I work from home so I’m in the office 7 days a week, usually 10 hours a day. Having a pre-decision about my office hours and Sabbath rest will balance my spiritual life with more time for personal study. When I read this book the first time it struck me that we will not feel GUILTY for a day of rest. We often think, “If I have work to do then I can’t rest until it’s done.” Now we realize this is nonsense, right? We should not feel guilty for a day of rest to restore our health, a day of Sabbath worship to celebrate God, and then 5 days of productive work. In small group I met some nurses working 12 hour shifts, and now they’re in a process to rearranging their errand days and pre-plan things such as meals and household chores.

After printing my Overwhelmed planner, I played with it for about a month using a 3-ring binder. It was an ugly binder but the planner was super functional and I know it’s something I’ll continue using daily. So this weekend I went to a local office store and bought an ARC “discbound” planner system, with a beautiful cover. Now I can insert the Overwhelmed planner pages and rip-them-out as needed and I’m a happy planner girl! What I don’t need are more planners that are never used. But I do need the SYSTEMS that keep me from overwhelm. Covers and tabs are the skeletal system of my planner, while the Overwhelmed pages are the muscle and circulatory system.

Last week Kathi Lipp created a Facebook Live video “Completely Overwhelmed by Clutter? Do these 7 things now!”- if you missed it here’s a replay!

USEFUL TIPS for online Bible study

Encouragement: you may not get the methods and systems the first time you read the Overwhelmed book. So go back like I did and read it again once you have the bigger picture, it makes sense!

  • A coach once taught me “If you can have a perfect day from 8am to noon, then nothing else you do matters that day.” So I set that expectation for myself with mini goals/ now micro cards.
  • If you miss a Facebook live, the videos are always available to watch anytime online. Find them on our page at http://facebook.com/WomensBibleCafe or on Cheri Gregory’s Facebook page.

ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS WEEK

  • Pray before you begin, and also pray for our ministry leaders and the book authors.
  • Read Chapter 11: “Just Put Your Big Girl Panties On” vs. Practicing Self-Care (in a World That Couldn’t Care Less
  • Read Chapter 12: “Just Wing It” vs. Cultivating Peace with a Plan
  • Work on your personal manifestos, micro cards, project plans, and planners!
  • DISCUSS: Meet and Greet! <– join a discussion group once a week!

Overwhelmed Online Bible Study | Week 4

By | Overwhelmed | No Comments

Welcome back to our study of “Overwhelmed: How to Quiet the Chaos and Restore the Sanity” by Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory. We’re now on week four and the entire study has been a GAME CHANGER for getting out of chaos. How awesome to have these tools for redevelopment: The Personal Manifesto, the Project Map, Micro Cards, the Gratitude Jar, and Overwhelmed Planner.

Now that we’ve learned the reasons behind our clutter and overwhelm, we’re moving into the process of application. We’ll look at the methods to get our planners organized, not just pretty pieces of paper. We’ll move tasks into manageable steps. We’ll identify morning and evening routines and create time each week for “Prep and Plan!” We’re making calendars that work for us.

My prayer is that you will stay on the journey and grow in community as you are now surrounded with women who “get what you’re going through” as one friend commented in small group today. For those of you that are off track and behind on this summer study- it takes very little time to get back into the reading and groups again. Don’t give up on your goal and join us on the journey.

Last week Cheri Gregory created a Facebook Live video on Increasing Your capacity For JOY- if you missed it here’s a replay!

USEFUL TIPS for online Bible study

Several women have commented how much they enjoy this study! In our small group today a friend posted “overwhelmed team” and it made me smile because YES, we are a team on a journey!

  • Share your creative ideas and photos in small groups or on our Facebook page. We really like seeing photos of your progress on this journey together.
  • The Project Map is a useful tool- learn to use it and create Micro-Cards on Post-It Notes.
  • If you miss a Facebook live, the videos are always available to watch anytime online. Find them on our page at http://facebook.com/WomensBibleCafe or on Cheri Gregory’s Facebook page.
  • Some of you said you can’t print the planner. If you don’t have a printer – go to local library and print your PDF planner, or most office supply stores have printing services.

ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS WEEK

  • Pray before you begin, and also pray for our ministry leaders and the book authors.
  • Read Chapter 9: “Just Go With the Flow” vs Personalizing a Well-Defined Work Week and Day
  • Read Chapter 10: “Just Clear Your Calendar” vs Creating a Calendar That Works For You
  • Work on your personal manifestos, micro cards, project plans, and planners!
  • DISCUSS: Meet and Greet! <– join a discussion group once a week!

[week 3] Overwhelmed Online Bible Study

By | Overwhelmed | No Comments

Women’s online Bible study is a place to fellowship in community! We’ve been reading “Overwhelmed: How to Quiet the Chaos and Restore the Sanity” by Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory. We’re on the third week of study and encourage you to get a copy of the book and join our live discussion groups. We meet seven days a week and since we believe in flexibility for busy schedules, our groups are never closed. Come join us and introduce yourself if you’re brand new.

We know many of you were on holiday last week, and getting back into Bible study does not need to trigger your sense of “overwhelm.” It’s really simple to read two chapters a week and if you don’t want to do the companion study guide, that’s okay! We select our discussion questions from the guide but you’ll still be able to answer them if you join a discussion group.

In chapter 6 this week we learned about getting on the boat- letting go of those little things that get in the way of our BIG things. We started thinking about the things we lose when we’re captivated by the details. I get that- it happens to me more than I realize too, and then the “boat is leaving without me.”

In chapter 7 this week we started thinking about our capacity for JOY, and how to increase the reservoir. Realizing that we can envy or we can enjoy was another game changer for many overwhelmed women this past week. I hope you took five minutes to read that in your Overwhelmed books this week. If not, go read it now on page 92.

Last week Cheri Gregory created a Facebook Live video on Creating the Personal Manifesto- if you missed it here’s a replay!

We will share a new study guide lesson once a week. Author Cheri Gregory is an educator and does not give out her lesson plans in advance. She wants us to complete the lesson before a new one is published. Print these out and put into a binder so you don’t lose them.
