Knowing God by Name Online Bible Study Week 3

Welcome back to womens online bible study as we discuss Knowing God By Name by Mary Kassian. We’ve just finished reading week three in our books as we learned about God’s power. We saw through scripture how His name means mighty power, LORD creator, the God who works wonders, LORD healer and God almighty. It was another amazing week of bible study!

Sometimes we’re too distracted to pay attention to His presence.  The image of Niagara Falls used by Mary Kassian is a good visual. As I reflected on this I though of the amazing thunderstorms, a rainbow bursting through a cloudy sky or lightening as it spatters a dark night. I realize in each situation I need to LOOK UP to see His visible power. When my head is down or I’m looking across the table at a friend for advice…I’m not tapping into the ultimate source of power. Nothing compares to the power of God!

This week I realized that God’s creation is both visible and invisible all at once. It’s visible beauty and majesty to those who believe in Him. It’s invisible to those who have closed their eyes to God’s Word. My response is one of respect and love for the Father who orchestrates from above.

Mary Kassian writes “This week we have been studying God’s names of power. These names indicate there is no shortage of power with God.”  Here’s an important verse every Christian should know: Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 NIV

Jesus had confidence when he was nailed to the cross, a perfect and sinless man. Jesus hoped for God’s will to be complete in Him. If you are struggling spiritually and have holes that need mending…seek Jesus in scripture. Reach for the Word of God and spend time the the almighty One. Discover the power source of a Christian life and let His light shine through you.

If you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you. 1 Peter 4:19 NLT

God is good, always.

    2. I am finding everything beautiful. The clouds, the sky, the shade, my flower garden, it is all just spectacular to me.
    3. Not sure if it is power–sleep– it lets me get away from things.

  • Danielle says:

    1. I think God wants me to stop worrying about the future and trust that He will provide. I like to have a plan, to have things all figured out, but since I was injured and then diagnosed with CRPS everything has been so uncertain. I need to find peace in the fact that all of my days were written in God’s book before one of them came to be (psalm 139:16).

    2. I have always loved the ocean. It’s so vast and soothing and I always feel closer to God when I’m sitting at the beach.

    3. I think sometimes I look to people as a “power source” instead of God

    4. I loved learning about God’s names of power. Yahweh Rophey – Lord Healer and El Oseh Phela – God Who Works Wonders were incredible comforting names for me to learn.

    • Christine Smith says:

Find a place of peace in your pain and each time it flares up, remind yourself Who is the great healer and comforter. He is always near. Praying for your peace Danielle.

  • Jennifer Kerby says:

    1. God is asking me to let control of control… I have a problem with trying to control all of the circumstances around me. For instance I love to make a plan for every little thing I do and try to time everything perfectly. Sometimes I get it all right but most off the time I’m a little off on timing or my plan just doesn’t pan out then I get upset with myself. So I need to let go and let GOD.
    2. I loved answering this question in our book because that day I happened to be sitting outside on my patio doing the study. It was a beautiful spring day and my yard was singing God’s praises. This is the 1st spring we have lived in this house and Oh man has God blessed us with his beauty. So I said my backyard with gorgeous flowers, plants and tall huge trees surrounding me; birds were singing all around and there was this wonderful soft cool breeze.
I also loved Psalms 19:1-3 The heavens declare the glory of God….

  • Angie says:

    1. In what area of your life is God asking you to let go of control and depend on His power instead?

Finances would be the big one for me. I long to be debt free and have tried and tried and tried over the last few years to accomplish this but do not seem to make much, if any, progress. There just always seems to be one thing after another that keeps me from reaching my goal. I do regularly pray and ask God to help me to reach this goal and I believe it is His will for me to be debt free. I’m not exactly sure how to practically depend on God’s power in this area though. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

    2. What object of nature communicates the wonder of God’s creation to you?

The stars that fill the night sky are amazing to me and never cease to fill me with awe and wonder.

    4. Share your thoughts about this week’s lesson.

Learning about, and thinking and meditating on God’s power this week has caused me to watch for Him more closely; not only in nature, but in His daily interaction in my life as well.

  • Hi, everyone, I am enjoying this study and I can’t tell you how much I learned. Not that I thought I knew it all. Just surprised me that the Lord has so many names.

In what area of your life is God asking you to let go of control and depend on His power instead?
    Storms, thunderstorms, hurricanes.

What object of nature communicates the wonder of God’s creation to you?
The ocean as one of the ladies in my group shared with me. It has no end, no beginning and all the rivers flow into it and it doesn’t overflow.

What “power source” are you tapping into instead of God? (food, people, work, etc )
    worry, anxiety.

1.) sin & chaos..Loved studying about God’s powerful name this week!

2.) A sweet bird that’s been singin to me every mornin’ this week & the moon & sun, He faithfully brings out each night & day! I also loved Brian Doerksen’s video “Creation Calls” she recommended to watch that speaks of seeing God in creation. It was beautiful! The vs.’s she had listed on pg. 57 also spoke to me in Job 26:7-14. I found out “covers the face of the full moon”..”full moon” in that vs. also means God’s throne! & in Job 26:12..”Rahab” in that vs…means..”chaos”..When I saw that, I rejoiced knowing my Powerful Rab-Koach was taking care of the chaos in my life & He gave me a peace about it!

3.) I think it’s more what Power I’m not tapping into when it comes to sin in my life. So many times I think I’m guitly of doing what Paul cautions us not to do..Romans 6:1-7..Using the grace of God as an excuse to keep on sinning! James McDonald says in his book..”I Really Want to Change..so, help me God”..in these vs.’s Paul is telling us that in Christ we are dead to sin! Not that we’ve reached sinless perfection, but simply & profoundly..We are dead to the POWER of sin!”..I’m learning that if I accept by faith that cos of my union w/ Christ & more specifically w/ his death, that the power of sin has been broken in my life & I can CHOOSE victory instead of defeat! ..Romans 6:3..

Beth Moore was teaching in Rev 1:5..”to HIm who loves us & has FREED us from our sins by his blood”..she said..”We are holding our chains our chains are not holding us”..We have been freed!!!..there is no addiction/behavior/defeat/ or destruction that can force it’s hold on me..It’s for FREEDOM that Christ has set me free! Galatians 5:1

I’m thankful today for my precious Savior Jesus Christ & that when I receive His cleansing..He wants me to KNOW..I’m not the only one who feels it..He feels it too..Luke 8:46..

    He’s my Yahweh Rophey…Luke 8:54

1.In what area of your life is God asking you to let go of control and depend on His power instead? In relocating to Indiana to be near by children, grandchildren, and extended family.
2.What object of nature communicates the wonder of God’s creation to you? Rainbows…I have stopped my car to get out and look at a rainbow! I KNOW God put it there!
3.What “power source” are you tapping into instead of God? (food, people, work, etc ) food, I struggle with my weight.
4.Share your thoughts about this week’s lesson. I stand in awe of His power, the way He does things to show His power, and that He loves me…little old 1 in a trillion me…and wants a personal relationship with me. It completely overwhelmes me that He loves me that much. It’s amazing that a God that powerful is in love with me. I am humbled beyond words at His love and have unending gratitude, thankfullness and love for Him.

    1. by watching my mom, I have truly understand how life can be so short. The things I worry about wouldnt even matter when I go on to my next journey in Heaven. I learned to not try to control everything. Just give it to God and stand on His word.

    2. I say the beach…talk about seeing Yaweh Borey right there! The water, the sand, the sun…to me the perfect example of our creator is the beach. I love it by the way 🙂

3.For me, it would be food. I was using food as comfort when upset about something instead of casting my care upon him. But I have a praise report, I didnt do that this time with my mom. I’ve been crying my way through, praying my way through, even fasting my way through. He’s Jehovah Nissi, our banner, our victory!

    4. I am standing on Yawah Rophey, the Lord our Healer for my mom. His word says by His stripes we are healed! I truly enjoyed learning the name El Oseh Phela, God who works wonders…I had a good time in the Lord during lunch that day:-)

    • Christine Smith says:

What a mature and inspiring decision to fast and seek God for comfort. Enjoy His presence….I’m certain he enjoys yours. God is good, always.

    2) For obvious reasons, my favorite sign of God’s faithfulness is the rainbow. When my children were little, they learned a Jewish prayer for seeing rainbows which thanked God for keeping his promises. Here is a link that is an adult reminder

    • Jennifer Kerby says:

I Love that song thanks for posting that. 🙂
I’m currently trying to teach my 2yr old about rainbows and God’s promise to us.

  • Laverne (Missy) says:

    Hello my sisters in Christ,

Christine how are you? I hope all is well. Something I read in one of the lessons made me think Jennifer is blind. Is that reality or did I miss read something. I could not find that information online anywhere but wanted to ask?

I’m going to respond to question # 4:
Share your thoughts about this week’s lesson.

Is it me or is everyone having several Aha! moments during this study? Wow on page 40 I really had a aha! moment with the “Before” picture. The author ask us to remember life before He touched you.

I remember those times and how I felt I can truly see and fell the difference and I’m so glad to be in the number.
Knowing He has me brings a smile to my face and joy to my heart!

    • Christine Smith says:

Yes, Jennifer lost her vision. She is a Christian singer, I saw her perform at my church several years ago. She has been on the Dr. Phil show- search YouTube and you may find her videos. She wrote another bible study called “Walk By Faith” about how she learned to walk without vision….it’s very powerful. I like fingerprints of God because Jennifer brings our attention to the small details, things we’d normally not “see” because we are have sight.

  • Tamera says:

1.In what area of your life is God asking you to let go of control and depend on His power instead?
This is really an intersting question – Up until eight months ago I would have said EVERYTHING. Mid-September I found myself unemployed. I was getting married in three weeks and we had laid out a 2-year plan that incorporated my $70K a year to pay off my car and a mortgage. I have always worked and been financially responsible for myself and my children. I have never depended on another person for financial support. My ex-husband didn’t like to work, didn’t care if bills were paid or not as long as the satellite TV bill was paid, etc. My soon-to-be new husband is a godly man who understands his head of household responsibility while always trusting God, etc. Longer story short – I have had to let go of controlling everything and depend totally on God. My husband is such a great leader for me and is thrilled I have this time off to be rejuvenated and renewed.

2.What object of nature communicates the wonder of God’s creation to you?
I love an awesomely powerful storm. God’s lightening shows are incredible! The rolling thunder is how I imagine His voice to sound. Imagine how marvelous it would sound to hear God professing His love for you in a rolling, booming, confident voice. How could we ever doubt Him!?!?

3.What “power source” are you tapping into instead of God? (food, people, work, etc )
See question #1! I am totally tapping into God over all else! It has been a beautiful time for me – and my husband!

4.Share your thoughts about this week’s lesson.
I love looking at the power of God. There is so much in His power. Right now Yahweh Rophey is who He is to me. I had been struggling with bone and joint pain for several months. Doctors gave it a name – Polymyalgia Rheumatica. I am not a person who has suffered illness or disease. I don’t take any medications. I sailed through menopause without hormone meds, no emotional upheaval, etc. I am the epitome of health! So while I didn’t feel right I was confused and didn’t understand what the deal was. It didn’t fit who I am. Once I knew it’s name I was able to stand specifically against it. Yahweh Rophey – my Healer – has always been there for me. Instead of denying my ill health, I should have turned to God immediately and reminded Him of His promise of health and prosperity! Always learning! I love it!

  • Lisa H says:

    1. In what area of your life is God asking you to let go of control and depend on His power instead?
Money. Since my mom passed and unemployment is ify at best, I find I have become a horrible penny pincher in several areas. To the point of extreme restriction resulting in stress and unhappiness. Not necessarily that I want to spend what I have on foolish things (which I used to do in the past), but that I know I used to spend on foolish things so now I don’t spend at all – on anything. Essentially I have locked myself up in my house so I don’t have to spend on gas – you know, just to take a drive.

    2. What object of nature communicates the wonder of God’s creation to you?
Most of it. I love to take the dogs out at night when the stars are out. The frogs and toads around me are all singing. I love the wind as it blows thru the weeping willow in my back yard. Several different types of birds are singing as I sit here typing this. I love the restorative action of rain, and how it can smell so fresh. I could go on 🙂

    3. What “power source” are you tapping into instead of God? (food, people, work, etc )
Food definitely. Destructive thought processes. Empty busyness.

    4. Share your thoughts about this week’s lesson.
I too find myself distracted when reading this study. I hate the demons ability to move my attention off of my God. One of the things I have been praying in my morning prayers is this: “Father, mold me into what You need me to be today. And when I stray, please pull me back. Make my actions bring glory to You.”

  • Sheree Poole says:

God’s creation is so amazing to me!! I don’t see how anyone can look up at a dark sky at night and see a full moon that gives off a brilliant light upon the earth and not believe in God, our Master Designer. And to think that we live on earth, spinning around in space with the other planets and a zillion plus stars and the sun and the moon, etc. etc., and we are not bumping into anything…truly amazing!! I love the verse we read from Job on page 57 of our workbook, “He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing” and in my NASB version, “He stretches out the north over empty space…” Job 26:7. The “void” and “empty space” and we are there, right where God placed everything so perfectly. Sometimes I think so hard about the “beginning” when God created our universe, and I am so in awe of His creation that my heart starts to race uncontrollably. It’s just too overwhelming!! And I just have to say, some people are just plain stupid to think that the big bang made it all happen. I also loved the part about snowflakes on page 61. It brought back a memory of when I lived in Germany as a child. When it snowed in Germany, the snowflakes were so large that I could catch snowflakes in my hand and actually see the design before it melted. How perfect God’s creation is and I’m so in awe of it all!! I am loving this study of “Knowing God by Name” 🙂

    • Christine Smith says:

I can imagine how beautiful those sonwflakes are. I think if I caught one I’d probably hold it and study it’s majesty too!

  • Alicia says:

    1. I need to be depending on God’s power when teaching my children. My job is to obey God in how I raise them, train them, teach them, but I absolutely cannot make them do the right thing or obey. Obviously they have consequences, but consequences are part of life. I can show them the right way, but I cannot make their hearts desire God. Good thing God is POWERFUL!

2.Lightning! I love snuggling up inside where it’s safe and listening to the thunder echo, the rain pour and lightning flash. It’s one of my most favorite things. God is mighty and can wreak terrible havoc, but He is also my safe haven and rescue in trouble.

    3. The computer…which is also where I watch all my television. Although the more I’m successfully away from it, the less interested I am in it and the more un-fulfilling it is when I revert back to it.

    4. Both Yahweh Rophey and El Shaddai really stuck with me this week. I love that in Hebrew, healer means “to sew together, to mend, to repair or refresh; to make sound or whole.” I read that description/definition and I feel refreshed and hopeful, because I need all those types of healing. I also liked looking at all the different possible meanings for El Shaddai. “God of the Mountain” “to be strong of powerfull to destroy” “The one who is enough” The strength and security I feel from all those descriptions brings a powerful peace to my heart.

  • Sue Alice says:

    1. My biggest problem is that I am a control freak, and I have not really given God control over all of my life, just parts of it. So control to God and learn to depend on Hin totally.

    2. Butterfly… His beauty, colors of them , the way they are created, the way they fly, and just how delicate they are. The summer, I thought God did care for me, so when I went outside I saw the most amazing blue butterfly wherever I went, I think it was God,s way of telling me He cares for me.

    3. My power source is the TV, books and the computer…..that is were I go when I am sad, bored, lonely, and to just kill time.

  • Lauren says:

1.In what area of your life is God asking you to let go of control and depend on His power instead?
My marriage and my home. I often try to micro-manage other people. I need to learn that they are in God’s hands, and they are going to be taken care of just fine. The world does not revolve around me (Yes, I’m in my thirties and I’m just now starting to figure it out… or learning to act like it, anyway).
2.What object of nature communicates the wonder of God’s creation to you?
There are so many… nature sings of His glory and power. I guess my favorite place to contemplate God is the beach. We try to go every year, and as I sit and let the waves lap over my feet, but watch them crashing out further, I am amazed. God is so awesome!
3.What “power source” are you tapping into instead of God? (food, people, work, etc )
Food.. definitely. It’s been my go to… when I’m bored, sad, angry, happy, etc. I need to learn to STOP it!
4.Share your thoughts about this week’s lesson.
Great week! I’m loving this. I usually am a day behind on everyone else because I don’t actually start the workbook until Tuesday, but all of it has been good. Her Know Him questions are thought-provoking and really sum up the lesson.

    • Christine Smith says:

Really good study…Mary Kassian has nailed it on this one!

    • Tawnya Kraus says:

Like Lauren, I too, struggle with letting God have total control of my family. It’s easy for me to fall into worry/anxiety at times regarding the safety & well fare of my husband & children. I enjoy taking time to meditate on the all-powerful God I read about in stories with my 3 yr old at bedtime… (parting the Red Sea, saving Daniel from the lions & the 3 in the fiery furnace…) the amazing God who did incredible things in the Bible is the same God I serve & worship on a daily basis! That blows me away & really helps me to remember how mighty & powerful he is. I am easily awed by His creation but think a lot about his power during thunderstorms. It’s frightening & exciting all at the same time- to experience his power in that way.

  • Irmarelie says:

What object of nature communicates the wonder of God’s creation to you?

For me, the object of nature that communicate the wonder of God’s creation is the sky. When you look at it you can see the sun, the moon and stars, clouds, a rainbow, etc. It is endless, beautiful, immense, colorful, vast, inmeasurable, etc. Of course, if you don’t look at it, you miss all of what is in it. It is always there but we miss its beauty because we don’t pay attention.

The same can be said about us with God. We are so stressed with our situations that we miss the big picture. We forget that our God is Rab-koach (Chief power of all – Mighty Power), Yahweh Borey (Lord Creator), El Oseh Phela (God who works wonders), Yahweh Rophey (Lord Healer) and El Shaddai (God Almighty). We don’t look and pay attention to Him.

    I’m thankful…..
    – that He is involved in my everyday life
    – that He has the power over everything that is happening to me; He is in control!
    – that God works for my good (Romans 8:28)
    – that He works with the details of my life; He doesn’t take anything for granted!
    – that He continues to intervene, amaze and reveal Himself to me
    – that I’m His work in progress; His not done with me and He doesn’t get tired of me
    – that He is there to “put me together”, to mend, to repair and make me whole; His healing is more that physical!
    – that He has no shortage of power; His decrees WILL happen!
    – that with His power, He can do more abundantly than all I might ask or imagine

My God continues to surprise me with all of His blessing. I never get tired of looking at the sky and I never get enough of my God.

1.In what area of your life is God asking you to let go of control and depend on His power instead? to be less critical, more positive, and let Him have His way, not mine!
2.What object of nature communicates the wonder of God’s creation to you?
The rising and setting of the sun
3.What “power source” are you tapping into instead of God? (food, people, work, etc )
    Approval from other people,,,,,,,,,,,,,
4.Share your thoughts about this week’s lesson.
For some reason I feel very distracted when I do this study and have a hard time remembering what I have learned and applying it ot my life. I really like the index cards, as they really help me stay focused! And the info here and from my leader,,,,, Keeps me focused, thanks! God is ALL MIGHTY and it is so comforting to remind myself of this each day!

    • Christine Smith says:

Keep praying before you begin reading and ask the LORD to bind any distractions during your study. Ask Him to help you keep focused for the next 15 minutes while you discover His presence in scripture and grow in faith. Keep praying each time you feel distracted.

    • Lauren says:

I’m reading the Bible through in the AM and one thing I do is set my timer on my phone for 15 minutes. I don’t do anything until that timer goes off. I’ve always been the kind who gets distracted by emails, TV, telephone, etc. and this really helps.
