Author Suzanne Woods Fisher inspires readers to slow down and understand the values that help build a strong family in her latest book Amish Values for Your Family. Suzanne brings her readers into the simple life of living in Amish communities. She writes from the heart as she describes family life in great detail. She then lays out a plan for contemporary families to incorporate Amish values into busy lives. For example, Suzanne describes the Amish money system and how they earn, manage and save money. She compares their simplicity with the non-Amish way of living in excess and our need for modernization. Suzanne writes “One of the keys to contentment in the Amish is that they filter their decisions through predetermined priorities: faith, family and community.” Big decisions are filtered through this Amish lens. Suzanne then asks her readers to consider if their own value of money is based on priority filters, or need.
Other chapters include Mother-in-Laws, Bird Counting, Laundry Day and Christmas…just to name a few. The book is light reading with short chapters on a single Amish theme. Each chapter ends with a road map called “getting from here to there.” Fisher is not encouraging her readers to become Amish; she simply wants the reader to experience a taste of Amish living and then look for ways to add simplicity to their own family life. It’s a good book worth reading if you are curious about the Amish way of living or the simple things in life. It’s a relaxing book to read and would be fun to bring on a family vacation.
