Are You a Fan or Follower of Jesus?

Most of us say we’re followers of Jesus- but have you considered that you may be nothing more than a fan? In the book Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus by teaching pastor Kyle Idleman, the issue of fan vs follower is discussed in detail. Idleman uses the analogy of a sports fan or someone who idols a celebrity and then challenges us to look at our personal relationship with Jesus.

Idleman also looks at the teaching of Jesus and compares it to the teaching of modern pastors. In order to be a follower and not a fan, he suggests we talk more about repentance than forgiveness, more about surrender than salvation, more about brokenness than happiness and more about death than life. He’s not writing the book to become popular, he’s writing it based on scripture values. Jesus cared more about the quality of his followers than the quantity. We should too. “Our churches have gone from being sanctuaries to becoming stadiums,” writes Idleman.  The difference between knowledge and intimacy is what separates followers from fans.

Each chapter in the book concludes with personal stories of people who are not fans of Jesus. The author’s objective is not to cause true followers to doubt or question their relationship with God; rather his hope is to help you define the relationship you have with Jesus and surrender to the invitation to follow Him.

Kyle Idleman Quotes from Not a Fan

  • There are some people who only come to church on Christmas Eve and Easter. We call them “Creasters.”
  • It wasn’t the size of the crowd Jesus cared about;  it was their level of commitment.
  • When we decide to believe in Jesus without making a commitment to follow Him, we become nothing more than fans.
  • Following Jesus isn’t something you can do at night when no one notices.
  • Fans who follow the rules instead of following Jesus find that they are weighed down with guilt.
  • Jesus came to free you from religion.

After reading Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed follower of Jesus, I concluded I’m a follower of Jesus and a fan of this book!
