God’s Healing Drip

This post is by Cindy Hamilton as she shares her breast cancer journey with our readers.

OK, I admit, walking into that chemo lab for the first time was a bit scary. The sweet nurse put my husband and me in a small room so that she could explain the process. The first drug that they were going to give me, she said, was a powerful one; and because it is red, some people called it “devil’s tail.” Well, there is no way that I was going to call it that, so I renamed it “the healing blood of Jesus.” She explained that the chemo would target the fast growing cells in my body. There were side effects that might take place, but they would do everything they could to give me something to off set them.

A young woman came in and sat down, obviously at home and familiar with the process. “Hi, I’m Jamie.” Jamie has Crohn’s Disease and was there for an infusion of potassium. I explained that it was my first time, and she started filling me in on how it all works. She was funny and smart, wise beyond her years. She shared her concerns for her children and her health. Before I left that day, we agreed that we would pray for each other. “It’s going to be alright,” she said.

The next day, I was back for an infusion of fluids, anti-nausea meds, and a drug that builds up blood cells. Guess who was there? Her face (and mine) lit up as I walked into the room. There was my new friend, Jamie. Patting the empty recliner beside her, she invited me to come sit down beside her. God has already told me that this journey would be one where He would introduce me to many new people.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” Acts 1:8 NIV

My Traveling Companions

This update is from Cindy Hamilton as she shares her breast cancer journey with our readers.

So, who goes with me on this journey? I am so blessed to have an amazing, strong husband of almost 42 years who loves me “through sickness and in health.” He is sweet and kind, solicitous when needed, and backs away when he knows that I just need to be alone. We are also blessed with three children who are strong in their Christian faith and love their mama……what can I say? And then there are our seven “grand” children, 10, 8, 6,6,6, 3, and 3. Their precious smiles, hugs, and kisses are what I live for. My heart’s desire is to see them all graduate from high school and college, and walk down the aisle in their weddings. Of course, there are my friends—dear, sweet, Christian sisters who bring me casseroles, pies to fatten me up, chicken salad, cute “Life is Good” hat and T-shirt, Subway sandwiches, send me cards and flowers, cry and laugh with me, pray for me, plan trips when I feel better, and help me decorate my shelves! I have also had calls from the brave survivors, giving me encouragement and strength that I can beat it too! Our church and pastor fills our spiritual souls with prayer, beautiful praise music, sound teaching, and the belief that healing is in the future. Added to all of this are my Facebook friends, the sisters at Womens Bible Café and other sisters that I have met through their beautiful and inspiring blogs. And I can’t leave out my constant companions, Max and Ruby, my darling doxies; looking into their beautiful eyes just warms me to my toes! Like the sweet song by Jamie Grace, I am “Not Alone”.

My husband and I met my doctor last week. I prayed that God would give me a doctor who cared………and He did! She carefully and unhurriedly explained the process of chemo with its possible side effects and assured me that she would do everything that she could do to help me survive chemo (or as my dear friend Ruth calls it—the healing drip into my body). She went out of her way to order one last test so that I could begin chemo a week ago Wednesday. The fight has begun.

Lies Women Believe Online Bible Study Week 1

Welcome back to the Womens Bible Cafe as we review and discuss week one from Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. As we learned from Nancy in the introduction on page 17, “reading this book won’t make your problems go away, but will point you in the direction of the Someone who can help.” The entire focus of our study is to unveil the lies and replace them with Truth based on scripture. We’ve been carrying the weight of past lies and hidden shame far too long…and its time for God’s children to reclaim their identity in Christ. Jesus says “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly,” John 10:10 NKJV. So my question is…how many of us are living abundant and joy-filled lives? Is your life “abundant to the full, till it overflows” John 10:10 AMP or is there room to clean out the lies? Let’s get started with our discussion….your participation is essential to add value to our bible study.

Last week when we launched our bible study we asked you what lies you wanted to break free from. There are 250+ women doing this study at the Womens Bible Cafe and 35% of you participated in last week’s discussion. Let’s do better this week! Pray and ask God to reveal to you any lies that are keeping you in bondage. Ask Him to reveal them so you can replace the lies with truth.

What Lies We Want to Replace With Truth (answers from last week’s group discussion)

  • negative feelings that are not of the Lord
  • “You Are Not Good Enough.” I often feel that I am not good enough as a mother, as a wife, as a teacher, as a friend, as a daughter, as a sister, etc.  Fear of not measuring up, I have to be better than others in order to get recognition, needing approval from others
  • worrying about my children
  • that a woman must be conventionally pretty to be happy or successful and that, as a 56-year-old I can no longer influence my family or impact the kingdom; insignificance that i can’t be better than i am right now and i wont be a mother; the lie that I do not provide value in my job and that I must work 24/7 to get ahead in this world. I would like to break free from the idea that what I do for a living is no big deal. I did not graduate from college and it is a huge regret in my life. I don’t feel like I met my expectations. I am always wondering “what if.” I would like to break free from entertaining the lies that I’m not smart enough, I missed my calling,
  • the lie that I have to hold on to anger or seek revenge when a friend has hurt me
  • “the need to be perfect,” “the need to only trust myself, because you can’t trust anybody else,” “there is no one to talk to when you are down because you look like you have issues and no one wants to inherit your problems”
  • the lie that I can not lose weight, the lie that I’m not pretty
  • I am great at comparing myself with someone else, then I can’t measure up. I hang on to guilt. I am horrible at asking for help. I feel like I am bothering someone by asking for help. I would like to not believe that I have to feel guilty for everything I do.
  • one lie that I want to leave behind is that I have to do everything on my own. feeling like I have to be a martyr and do it all by myself when it comes to kids, work, home, etc. I then feel guilty to ask for help when I need it. the lie that I need to be the perfect mother, wife, room mom, housekeeper, well… everything.
  • an even bigger lie: the media is more trustworthy than God or your faith.
  • I want to break free of the lie of worry. but probably most importantly lies that I have to have a perfect home (always OCD clean!); I have to be perfect in the eyes of others and that people won’t like and love me for who I truly am. I want to live a God given happy and free life without worry or the need to control everything.
  • I want to break free from the lie of Satan that I am not good enough in my marriage… I feel that I need to be a better wife which leads me to compare myself to other women. Having fear that I will not be here long enough to see my children grow up. I’d like to break free from believing I have to be the perfect wife, mother, daughter, worker and stop being such a martyr all the time.
  • I want to break free from the lie that being “religious” is enough.
  • I would like to fully accept that my identify is not based on what others think/say but on Christ and Christ alone
  • I want to break free from the lie that it’s never going to get any better and that I am not going to get anything back from the “sacrifices” I’ve been making. Sick of listening to the doubt! Feelings that the Lord is disappointed in me when I don’t live up to what “I” feel that I should be. Or what I’m not.

Nancy says there’s a common thread in the lies we desire to be set free from…“the best lies look like the Truth.” In the weeks ahead, we’ll open our eyes to deception and learn to recognize Truth. We’re on a journey to be set free!

Quotes From Nancy Leigh DeMoss

  • Satan has used deception to win our affections, influence our choices and destroy our lives.
  • What we believe will be seen in the way we live.
  • Every act of sin begins with a lie.

Breaking Free Online Bible Study Week 1

Welcome back to bible study, as we discuss week one from Breaking Free by Beth Moore. We now have 350+ women participating in this study, and it’s exciting to know that so many of us are breaking strongholds. This week we focused on untying the cords of the yolk. If you missed the audio/video sessions, Beth introduced two key concepts. She defines a stronghold as “anytime you are preoccupied by a destructive thought process” and “anything which exalts itself over the truth and scripture of God.” Bondage, in Beth’s description, is “anything that hinders us from the fullness God has called us to be.” Our ten-week bible study will focus on these two concepts and how to break free from the bondage of our strongholds. Beth reminds us on page 26 of the workbook that “acknowledging the slavery is a crucial starting place toward authentic freedom.” Let us pray for one another as we journey from bondage to freedom, using the bible as our GPS navigation system. God’s Planning System.

How We Seek Shelter (from last week’s online discussion)

  • I tend to seek shelter in food, eating until I feel totally satisfied. I also distancing myself from family and friends. I close in and watch tv and just let life pass me by.
  • I seek shelter by not showing up. When things are troubling me I tend to lie and make excuses for why I can’t come to church or show up with friends.
  • I seek shelter in my home. I go to work, church when I can ( I work a lot of Sundays), and I recently realized that is about the extent of it. I used to be a lot more involved in church activities but over time I have faded out. I find myself curling back up into my little protective shell and don’t reach out for fellowship.
  • I seek shelter by saying I will begin tomorrow and thinking/letting myself believe I will. This is an endless vicious circle that I am so tired of. Very worn from it all.
  • I seek shelter in my home or like Scarlett O’ hara is credited to saying ” I will not think about this today I will think about this tomorrow.” :-)
  • I like many other of the women here seek shelter by hiding, burying the pain and not dealing with it till it becomes a problem.
  • I seek shelter by shying away from the problem and from almost everything. I tend to “shut down” and keep to myself.
  • I seek shelter by running away. I believe that if I was in the right place in my walk with HIM I wouldn’t be in situations that called for me to run away.
  • Shelter to me is being safe in life. Safe in my job. Safe in my family. Don’t get me wrong, I think security is a good thing, but I think I tend to not attempt a task because it can prove to be risky of failure.
  • Sometimes I seek shelter by ignoring the elephant in the room.
  • I seek shelter by whining and adding more to my schedule. You know, because then I have a good reason for being disorganized and not having enough time, I am over committed! Only recently have I realized this is what I do.
  • I seek shelter by not allowing anyone to be close to me, I feel that people will find a way to somehow hurt me and so I usually don’t want to be around people.
  • By procrastinating I seek shelter. Putting it off another day because I am intimidated or overwhelmed.

A common thread in how we seek shelter as women…we’re not seeking Jesus. During our Breaking Free bible study, we will seek freedom as we discover our strongholds and give them over to Jesus.

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.  Isaiah 61:1-3 NIV

Thanks to Sunny Girl for sharing this comment “I just wanted to point some thing out.. At the beginning of the study we are instructed to read Isaiah 61:1-3, I just wanted to point out that this is Jesus talking. You will notice as you read, Jesus is referred to as “Lord” and God is “God” Keep an eye out for the capital letters… Isaiah 61:1 He (God) has sent Me (Jesus) to heal the brokenhearted ect…. When I first started reading this I thought it was God talking to us, then I noticed the capital “Me” and realized it was Jesus’ talking to us about His mission when He comes to earth. Hope your day is filled with sun shine smiles :)

Prayer Requests

Our Prayer Wall has many requests, so please visit the page during the week and pray for these women who are asking for your help. If you have a prayer request for our prayer wall, post a comment on the wall.

Beth Moore Quotes

  • God hates pride because it dethrones Him and puts ourselves at the center of our universe.
  • Pride, in itself, can lead to captivity.
  • God often calls the unworthy.
  • God is the glorious initiator of reconciliation.
  • We can be faithful to God and still be attacked by the enemy.
  • Faith is tested by what we do with fear.

For Next Week

Group Discussion- Answer one question or as many as you like

  2. Instead of looking to God, we often look to humans to guide our choices. Why do you think we make this choice at times? (bottom of page 17 )
  3. Can you think of a few potential disasters from which Christ saved you? (page 25)
  4. Share a favorite moment from this week’s study.

Packing For The Journey

This post was written by Cindy Hamilton as she shares her breast cancer journey with our readers.

Half the fun of taking a trip is planning it! I love to pour over the brochures, peruse the websites, make lists, and pack my suitcase. So, I’ve been thinking; what do I pack for this spiritual and healing journey? Here’s my list so far:

God’s Word (This has already given me a lot of courage and strength.) The Bible will be my travel guide and map. When or if I get lost along the way, I have all the confidence in the world that He will be my GPS. There may be a lot of “recalculating, recalculating,” but I trust that God knows where this journey ends, and He will get me there safely.

Prayer Journal–Over the years, I have kept a prayer journal during different times of my life. It always amazes me to go back and read how God has intervened in the most wonderful ways! Several years ago, I purchased a book called, Praying in Color by Sybil McBeth. This book teaches even those of us who aren’t very artistic to doodle our prayers in a journal. It’s fun and effective.

My “fight” songs. I have created a playlist of my favorite songs on my IPod that are musical prayers for me. Music is healing! When I wake at night, dark thoughts filling my head, I sing. I often wake with one of these songs playing in my head.

There are several books that I want to read along the way. A dear friend just sent me The Meal that Heals, Enjoying Intimate Daily Communion with God by Perry Stone. Anne Voskamp’s book, One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are is another book that will be packed away in a special place. There are so many wonderful books out there that are just a click away on my IPad!

Speaking of the IPad! The YouVersion app at www.youversion.com/free-bible-apps is a free Bible App that allows you to take the Bible along on your IPad, IPhone, or laptop. The App has multiple translations, Bible reading plans, a place to take notes, and other great options. So, that will definitely be packed in my suitcase!

My camera. Photography gets my creative juices flowing! When there is an artist inside who can’t draw or paint, photography fills the void. It’s fun to see God’s world through the lens of a camera. It’s as if you have an intimate close-up look at His creation. Scripture and photography just goes hand in hand.

My Pillow………OK, I don’t go anywhere without my pillow!
It’s going to be a miraculous journey; and I may have to pick up some things along the way, but I have all the faith in the world that God will provide. Now, who will go on this journey with me…………

Lies Women Believe Online Bible Study Starts Today

Welcome to our first week of Lies Women Believe at the Women’s Bible Study Cafe. We are leading this study because so many women have been deceived or know someone who had been deceived! This is a ten-week Bible study and focused on exposing the lies and replacing them with truth. We’ll be reading the book Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss as she gives insight into breaking free from deception and enemy schemes. As you read the book and companion guide, you’ll discover Nancy is a woman who is not afraid of telling the truth. She backs the truth with wisdom from scripture and reveals ways to avoid traps and temptation through these lies.

As we participate in the study, we begin to discover lies we knew …and lies we were blinded to, just like Eve when she tasted the apple. “You and I have been lied to. We have been deceived,” writes Nancy and we’re about to take a 10-week journey to uncover specific areas of our lives where the enemy tried to deceive and destroy us.

As I write this tonight, my heart is breaking and the image above brings tears to my eyes. The image reminds me that we can be tempted by Satan as he makes the lie look appealing…or we can weigh the lie against the Truth of knowing God. We’re in a spiritual battle for our lives and if we don’t know the difference between the lie and the Truth, we lose.  We can choose to live in ignorance and battle the lies year after year, or we can choose knowledge and arm ourselves for spiritual battles. Through our own desire we can recognize the lies and guard our hearts, minds and souls. When we know the truth…we find peace and comfort by knowing God’s Word.

Fighting the enemy will not be easy and you will experience resistance. I’ve completed the Lies Women Believe study with my church small group and the spiritual warfare I saw surrounding it was intense. Do you really think Satan wants you to know the lies he’s been using against you? Of course not! So he will discourage you, distract you, and even deceive you to entice you into quitting the study. He’s not willing to let go of his captives and the longer you’ve believed the lies… the bigger the battle. Decide now to live in ignorance to the lies you are permitting in your life…or decide now to discover the lies and reclaim the Truth in scripture. I’m on a journey to discover these lies and arm myself with the Truth…and I hope you’ll join me in this informative bible study by Nancy Leigh DeMoss.

If This Is Your First Bible Study- How to Participate

Here is what you can expect from your participation in the Lies Women Believe  Bible study

  • Pray before you begin reading. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your heart to wisdom.
  • This online Bible study provides flexibility and convenience for you. Just read your daily lessons, five total, lasting about 30-45 minutes each day. A good plan is to read each morning Monday through Friday, allowing the weekend to make up any lesson you missed during the week.
  • Visit the Bible Cafe anytime on Tuesday and join in the group discussion by posting a comment.
  • Seek truth. God uses the most ordinary people for his extraordinary purpose. Listen to each other and be willing to share, just remember to allow judgment and healing for God.
  • If this is your first bible study, you may enjoy using highlighter markers. I start with a blue highlighter and mark the scripture verses, such as John 3:16, in my workbook. I’ll mark all the verses for week one, before I start my reading. This way, when my eyes leave the pages of my workbook to find a reference in my bible, I can quickly go back and locate my place in the workbook. The blue highlighter is a “place marker” when I study. I then use a yellow highlighter to mark my favorite words. If I like what the author is saying, I will mark the letter “Q” next to the sentence, and this reminds me I’ll want to quote the author and post it on Facebook or Twitter.

For Next Week

  • Write a letter to God on the inside cover of your workbook. Put today’s date inside your book and tell Him where you are in your life right now, and where you hope He leads you during your 10-week study of Lies Women Believe.
  • Read Chapter One in your book and companion guide.
  • Check in with your Small Group Leader. Contact us if you have not heard from your leader.

Group Discussion- Answer one question or as many as you like

  1. What lie (s) do you want to break free from during this 10-week bible study?
  2. Nancy says “”Anytime we receive input that is not consistent with the word of God we can be certain Satan is trying to deceive and destroy us.” How do you feel about this?
  3. If you were sitting in a room with the other women participating in this study, what words of encouragement would you say to them?

Breaking Free Online Bible Study Starts Today

Welcome to our first week of Breaking Free Updated Edition at the Women’s Bible Study Cafe. We are repeating this study because so many women missed it when we hosted it before! This is a ten-week Bible study and one of the most powerful you’ll ever read. In this 10-year anniversary edition of Breaking Free, author Beth Moore shares her personal journey of breaking free from captivity. As you read the workbook, you’ll discover Beth is a woman who is transparent, honest, Godly, spirit-filled and passionate about helping other women break free. Beth does not use words of gentleness, she uses words of truth and experience. She does not allow insignificance or unimportance in our life experiences. As we participate in the study, we begin to understand that Beth Moore has been in our shoes. She is an ordinary woman like us, and she knows how to capture the spirit of the Bible. Beth Moore will not baby talk us to earn our trust, she will kick us in our stagnant thoughts and pull us out from a pit. As Beth will remind you, she’s not a hero; she’s a simple woman after the heart of God. And she wants you to know His heart too!

As I write this tonight, my heart is breaking and the image above brings tears to my eyes. The image reminds me that we can break free from depression, spiritual bondage, overwhelming addictions and anything else that has held us captive…and we can do so only through knowing God. We can’t break free by allowing others to tug on the ropes or push us into freedom…we can only break free of our own free will. We can choose to live in bondage and suffer years and years with strongholds, or we can choose freedom. Through our our desire we can break the ropes that bind our hearts, minds and souls. When we break these ropes…we find freedom in releasing the strongholds and covering ourselves in the Truth of God’s Word.

Breaking the ropes will not be easy and you will experience resistance. I’ve completed the Breaking Free study three times now and I can say with certainty there is freedom for those who finish the study, not for those who start the study and put the book away after a few weeks. Decide now to live in bondage with the strongholds you are permitting in your life…or decide now to break free and reclaim your identity in Christ. I’m on a journey to discover my strongholds and break free…and I hope you’ll join me in this life-changing bible study by Beth Moore.

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15 NKJV
