We’re back with another Beth Moore SSMT verse! We’re on our 13th memory verse for the year 2011. Some of you are just joining us, so be sure to read About the SSMT. You can start anytime.

Did you see Beth Moore’s blog post today? I was so excited to read that she is 6 weeks away from finishing her bible study on James. I’m not sure when Lifeway will publish this new Beth Moore bible study. James is one of my favorite books and I completed another study of it by Lenya Heitzig and Penny Pierce Rose, so I am really excited to see Mama Beth dig into this one. When she publishes it….we’ll be ready to read it here at the Womens Bible Cafe.

Enjoy the video. The Lords Prayer by Andrea Bocelli

Here is Beth Moore’s 12th scripture memory verse for this year:

Beth, Houston. “Make every effort to present yourself before God as a proven worker who does not need to be ashamed, teaching the message of truth accurately.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (The NET Bible) Memorizing God’s Word this year has caused me to have a redirected mind in a situation that could have bred fear and discontentment.

SSMT Verse 11

It’s time for SSMT Verse Eleven as we memorize our next scripture verse for the year. If you are not familiar with the Beth Moore Scripture Memory “SSMT” then please read About the SSMT. You can start anytime. Be sure to stop by Beth Moore’s blog to see her article on SSMT Verse 11. Since our goal is to memorize 24 scripture verses in 2011, it seems we’re almost half-way there. What amazes me is that I can look back at my SSMT notebook and reflect on the reason why I selected specific verses. For example. my first SSMT verse was

Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose. Proverbs 18:21 Message

I remember selecting this verse to remind me to be gentle with my parenting. I started paying attention to my words and visualized if they were fruitful or poison. It was an interesting two weeks while I memorized this, and I’m sure my kids heard me quote it more than once.

During this time I also closed my business LifeVerse® Jewelry and then made a decision to return to work as a REALTOR®. So these two verses SSMT 9 and 10, gave me guidance and direction.

You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail. Proverbs 19:21 NLT

For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God. Hebrews 3:4 NLT

I’m certain many of you are selecting verses applicable to your current seasons of life. I’ve enjoyed reading them along with your comments. Once again, it’s time to post your scripture memory verse. Be sure to post your name, where you are from, and your verse.

SSMT Verse 8

We’re on SSMT Verse Eight as we memorize our next scripture verse for the year. I’m still using my SSMT spiral notebook to write down my verses and memorize them. I’ve found myself quoting the verses to other people, so I know the memorization is having a positive effect. I’ve even started conversations with my children and elderly in-laws, saying something like “I just memorized this verse and I learned….” It’s been fun to open conversations, while at the same time not appearing to brag because I know scripture. On other occasions, I’ve found myself in need of the verses for a spiritual battle- and the weapon always works when I remember to arm myself. I hope you are growing spiritually as you memorize your own verses and sharing them with us below. If you need ideas for verses, you may want to visit this list of the Top 100 Bible Verses.

Here is the link to SSMT 8 on Beth Moore’s Blog.

I found this interesting video on how to organize your scripture verses, something we’ve discussed here before. Some of you may enjoy the video, while others may find the system too much work. Here’s the video:

SSMT Verse 7

Welcome back to our scripture memory verse SSMT. We’re about to memorize out 7th scripture verse of the year! When you visit Beth Moore’s blog you’ll read her own 2011 Siesta Scripture Memory Verse SSMT number seven. I found a John Piper article on Crosswalk called Why Memorize Scripture? Six Reasons. Here are the six reasons mentioned in the article, you’ll want to read the entire article for more information.

John Piper’s Six Reasons to Memorize Scripture (Source: Crosswalk.com)

1. Conformity to Christ
Paul wrote that “we all… beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.” If we would be changed into Christ likeness we must steadily see him. This happens in the word. “The LORD revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the LORD” (1 Samuel 3:21). Bible memorization has the effect of making our gaze on Jesus to be steadier and clearer.

2. Daily Triumph over Sin
“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word… I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:9, 11). Paul said that we must “by the Spirit… put to death the [sinful] deeds of the body” (Romans 8:13). The one piece of armor used to kill is the “sword of the Spirit,” which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17). As sin lures the body into sinful action, we call to mind a Christ-revealing word of Scripture and slay the temptation with the superior worth and beauty of Christ over what sin offers.

3. Daily Triumph over Satan
When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness he recited Scripture from memory and put Satan to flight (Matthew 4:1-11).

4. Comfort and Counsel for People You Love
The times when people need you to give them comfort and counsel do not always coincide with the times you have your Bible handy. Not only that, the very word of God spoken spontaneously from your heart has unusual power. Proverbs 25:11 says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.” That is a beautiful way of saying, When the heart full of God’s love can draw on the mind full of God’s word, timely blessings flow from the mouth.

5. Communicating the Gospel to Unbelievers
Opportunities to share the gospel come when we do not have the Bible in hand. Actual verses of the Bible have their own penetrating power. And when they come from our heart, as well as from the Book, the witness is given that they are precious enough to learn. We should all be able to sum up the gospel under four main headings (1) God’s holiness/law/glory; 2) man’s sin/rebellion/disobedience; 3) Christ’s death for sinners; 4) the free gift of life by faith. Learn a verse or two relating to each of these, and be ready in season and out of season to share them.

6. Communion with God in the Enjoyment of His Person and Ways
The way we commune with (that is, fellowship with) God is by meditating on his attributes and expressing to him our thanks and admiration and love, and seeking his help in living a life that reflects the value of these attributes. Therefore, storing texts in our minds about God helps us relate to him as he really is. For example, imagine being able to call this to mind through the day:

SSMT Verse 6

Once again it’s time to learn another scripture verse. You can drop by Beth Moore’s blog and read the SSMT Verse 6 for some wonderful ideas and inspiration. Recently I watched Beth Moore on LifeToday and was inspired by her personal commitment to memorize scripture. Here is what she said in one of the segments:

I am big on scripture memory. I told a group “at any given time when you run into me on the streets, you can always say to me ‘what scripture are you memorizing?’ If I can’t tell you, then ask me ‘what’s WRONG with you!” For me, God has called me to such a vicarious life of scripture memory, that it has been my mental salvation. This has been my key to living in victory. This is what God has used to take a very defeated mind and completely rewire the hard drive of my thinking. It was through memorizing the Word of God. Beth Moore, Life Today, Episode 138 Praying God’s Word Feb 9, 2011

It was valuable to hear Beth say that she may have just a few words memorized on her verse, and what mattered was her effort; she did not quit and continued to memorize it.  Don’t worry about being a perfect scripture memory siesta, focus on your effort and your heart. God knows the heart.

One idea to help remember your verse is to pray over it and have a dialogue with God. Beth has a method for this, she’ll copy and past a scripture verse into a MS Word document. Then she’ll “talk back to God” as she prays over the verse and writes her own words to Him. She uses two colors of “ink” for this, one for the Lord’s Word and one for hers…and she is in dialogue with Him. Try it and and share your experience with us! “Use scripture as an invitation to dialogue with God” says Beth in the video.

SSMT Verse 5

We’ve now memorized four scripture verses for the 2011 Siesta Scripture Memory Team SSMT, and we only have 20 more to go! It’s not too late to join us, please read the SSMT details here.  Once again you can visit Beth Moore’s blog to see her personal SSMT verse and find a fresh word of encouragement. Beth had 6,684 responses to Verse 4- it is such a delight to know so many women around the world are memorizing scripture and carrying His Word in their hearts.

For fun, if you have a Twitter or Facebook account, ask the question “What is your SSMT for today?” See how many verses you get as a reply, and how many people ask “what do you mean?” Use the question as an opportunity to explain the memory verse program (SSMT) and then share your verses. If you’re skilled with the webcam, make a video and post it on your blog or Facebook account. Who knows…your video may “go viral.”

I’m writing my verses into a SSMT journal and I carry them with me all day long. In the morning before bible study, I pray over the verses, going back to my first verse and ending with my fourth verse. In carpool, I read my verses again- this time I’ll insert my name into the verses and personalize them. At the end of the day, the verses become the beginning of my evening prayer. My effort matters more to me than my perfection, so I simply try my best to memorize them.

Remember, pray before selecting your fifth verse today. Ask for the wisdom of the Holy Spirit to guide you, then carefully choose your verse. I can’t wait to see what you’ve selected!

What to Do

List your name, location and verse. If you want, tell us why you selected this verse to memorize.
