Music for the Bible Study Cafe

When I heard this song on KLOVE Christian Music, I knew you’d want to hear it too!

The song called by I Need a Savior by Among The Thirsty, is a reminder of why we are participating in this new Bible study. We’re participating because we want to KNOW our Savior, pursue a relationship with him and understand his teachings. Please enjoy this beautiful song.

Come to Jesus

I saw this song on YouTube, and it reminds me of an event I saw. A few years ago, our church preformed a visual presentation of this song Come to Jesus by Chris Rice. In the presentation, the song played in the background as “actors” came onto the stage. A man dressed as Jesus stood on stage and touched each character as they walked across the stage. Characters included:

  • Man in prison clothing, touched Jesus and found forgiveness
  • Frail woman in wheelchair, met Jesus and found hope
  • A teenager wearing rebellious attire, met Jesus and found security
  • A child with a broken arm, met Jesus and found comfort
  • A preemie baby with her parents, met Jesus and found love

Although the presentation was the last day of Vacation Bible School, all the adults sat in the auditorium and cried. The week before, we buried a church member who was 49 days old, Tessa Joy. When we saw the preemie baby on stage, followed by family members and grandparents, our hearts played upon the words of the song and we KNEW little Tessa had “come to Jesus.” I’m not sure who the newborn baby was on the stage, but she too was frail and fought for her life. The song and the presentation reminds us that when we Come to Jesus, we find peace, hope, love and joy.

If you have not found Jesus in your heart, then confess your sins, ask forgiveness, accept the Savior Jesus and KNOW God. Three times I asked “Holy Spirit fill me” and since then, I’ve never been the same. You can continue to live the life you have, or you can life a life filled with the Holy Spirit. Just ask.

Enjoy the music,

Welcome October!

harvest

What a beautiful time of year, as we celebrate fall colors, harvest and the approaching Christmas season. Today on Twitter we shared memories of Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Lattes, Pumpkin Bread…well..everything pumpkin! Yum. Thankful Costco sells whipped cream topping in bulk!

Tomorrow we start our Book Club by reading the bestseller book called The Noticer by Andy Andrews. You’ll start reading this week and each Sunday we’ll post discussion questions from the back of the book. Anytime during the week, come to the Bible Cafe and post a comment on the current chapter.

Later today I’ll be watching Seminar Three Video for Pursuing More of Jesus and posting a blog comment for you. I’d like to give a special thanks for all the women who are sharing comments, encouraging each other, expressing discomfort and discouragement and being “real.” Because of you, this study has been successful and enjoyable as we all walk together in faith. We have 200-300 people reading the blog each day.

  • We live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)
  • For we live by believing and not by seeing. -NLT for Theresa!
  • That’s why we live with such good cheer. You won’t see us drooping our heads or dragging our feet! Cramped conditions here don’t get us down. They only remind us of the spacious living conditions ahead. It’s what we trust in but don’t yet see that keeps us going. Do you suppose a few ruts in the road or rocks in the path are going to stop us? When the time comes, we’ll be plenty ready to exchange exile for homecoming. -The Message for those who like to read many words!

Reminders

  • I will post an update on the Seminar Three video later this afternoon
  • If you don’t have a copy of The Noticer, get one today from Walmart or any bookstore
  • Keep posting comments-your words are valuable to all
  • Get a pumpkin and celebrate fall

Hugs and Blessings,

”Christine”

Name That Tune-Savior Songs

namethattuneSince our study is about Jesus, it would be a fun activity to name as many songs as we can with the name Jesus or Savior. Post a comment with songs about the Savior Jesus Christ. As a group, try to post different songs or introduce us to new Savior songs. No need to link the songs, just list the song and the artist, for example:

I Need a Savior, by Among the Thirsty

Ready, begin! Name that tune!

Pursuing More of Jesus with Anne Graham Lotz

anneGIf you’ve looked at the author information page in your workbook Pursuing More of Jesus by Anne Graham Lotz, then you know she has been speaking in ministry around the world for over 30 years. She is an award-winning and bestselling author of numerous books, and the mother of three children and three grandchildren. Anne was born in 1948 and is the second daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Billy Graham.

For several years Anne taught the Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) and in 1988 she founded AnGeL Minsitries, for the purpose of “reviving the heart of God’s people.” She travels and preaches worldwide as a female evangelist.

In addition to our study, Anne has published an eight-week Bible study called “I Saw the Lord.” She has also published a new book called The Magnificent Obsession. Max Lucado describes her new book as “We crave. But behind these yearnings is a deeper one- a craving for God. In these pages, Anne identifies this longing and shows us how God and only God can satisfy it.” Dr. Henry Blackaby thinks her new book “should be carefully read by all who are diligently seeking God’s will.”

Recently, Anne Graham Lotz was featured in an article by Time magazine, entitled “Billy Graham’s Daughter, Anne Graham Lotz” (Sept. 2,2009). When challenged by the Time reporter, Anne responds “Even in my own life, I’ve found that religion can be one of the greatest impediments to finding God. And by “religion,” I don’t mean “faith.” I mean rituals, creeds, traditions, and often leaders — all of our means of trying to connect with God. They can get in the way of developing a relationship with God.” Christianity Today called Anne a Relevant Maverick in an article written October 21, 2008.

With 30 years ministry experience, Anne is challenging Christians to seek authentic leaders who follow the word of God. “The only way we can discern the true from the false is to know the Shepherd’s voice-God’s Word,” she writes in Pursuing More of Jesus. She is disliked by many when she challenges other religious speakers for not speaking Biblical truth. Anne is passionate about Bible study and says “one of the primary reasons we need to be in a disciplined study of the scriptures is so we can saturate ourselves in the truth.” When you participate in her inductive Bible study, she encourages you to discover look at the words of scripture and Pursue More of Jesus.

How to Use the Workbook

PursuingBookWe’re ready begin “Pursuing More of Jesus” a Bible study workbook written by Anne Graham Lotz. Anne has published two books by this name; either book will be fine for this online study, though the workbook is preferred.

Set aside a regular place and time for your daily Bible study. I prefer the early morning before my children wake, because the word stays fresh in my mind throughout my day. Since I’m easily distracted, I choose to study when the phone will not ring, when the television isn’t blabbing, or when the kids aren’t demanding attention. Often I’ll sit beside my husband with a cup of coffee and we read side-by-side in the early morning, with two warm dogs snuggled in our laps.

When I begin my day with God, I find myself more relaxed and less worried about completing the study or catching up. Sometimes, I enjoy the study so much I’ll bring my Bible and workbook to carpool, arrive early to get a “good parking spot” and devour my workbook while sipping an afternoon latte.

Find a time that works best for you and be consistent with the same place and time for your daily lessons with God. Begin each lesson with a prayer and focus your attention on God and His word.

Do this FIRST

  • Look at the SAMPLE LESSON on page 12-13 of your workbook.
  • Read the verse under Step One.
  • Look at Step Two. Using a pen or pencil, go back to Step One and CIRCLE all the words listed in Step 2. You’ve just learned to identify the facts!
  • Look at Step Three. Look for the lessons in the scripture. Is there a promise, a warning, a claim or a command to obey?
  • Look at Step Four. The author is asking herself questions based on the scripture. CIRCLE the beginning of the question (Am I, What if, When have, What is).
  • Look at Step Five. This is your prayer room, where you pray and ask God for an action based upon what you read.

How to Use the Workbook

The daily study is divided into FIVE STEPS. You’ll follow these simple instructions each day of your study:

STEP 1:

  • Begin by reading the scripture passage for the day, printed in your book.
  • Underline, circle or mark the text.

STEP 2:

  • Make a verse-by-verse list of the facts from the scripture verse.
  • Do not paraphrase, just list facts.
  • What does the passage say?
  • There is an example on page 12 of the workbook.

STEP 3:

  • What lessons can be learned from these facts?
  • What do the facts mean?
  • Who is speaking, what is the subject, is there an action, etc.
  • Is there something in the passage you should do, obey, claim, or take heed?

STEP 4:

  • What is God saying to you in this passage?
  • Rephrase the lessons into a question: Should I, Could I, Do I,etc…
  • What will you do now to live it out?
  • Write out your questions and thoughts.

STEP 5:

  • Find something in the lesson that seems to speak to your heart.
  • What are you hearing God say?
  • How will you respond?
  • Write out your thoughts and the verse number, date it, and be accountable to what God is telling you.

This is an Inductive Bible Study, but it is not a Precepts for Life study by Kay Arthur. If you are familiar with Precepts, then you may find the format by Anne Graham Lotz to be different than what you’re used to. Some of you are using the new Inductive Study Bible published by Kary Arthur’s ministry. Each author has a different study format and in this workbook we’re following the leadership of Anne Graham Lotz. Feel free to modify the study to fit your individual needs, however for the group study we’ll be following the workbook format.

Know Jesus

butterflysmA few months ago I had a simple dream that lasted less than five seconds. In this dream, I saw a bright butterfly with orange, red and yellow wings. As I looked at the bright butterfly I heard the words “KNOW ME.” I knew that was my invitation to know Jesus and that my hearts desire was to create an intimate relationship with him.

At the conclusion of our last study Me, Myself and Lies I asked the group to help select the new Bible study and they chose Pursuing More of Jesus. Recalling my five-second butterfly dream, I followed my heart and trusted my faith. I’m in awe of the study we’re about to begin. Please join me and a few other Christian women as we begin our online study and follow our hearts towards intimacy with Jesus.

Tomorrow we start a new Bible study written by Anne Graham Lotz called “Pursuing More of Jesus.” We’re a diverse group of women with one common goal: knowing Jesus. We know Jesus when we study the word of God. We know the worldview when we watch TV, read magazines, listen to religious people who are not authentic, or follow the latest trends.

If you don’t have the workbook, join us anyway and you’ll use a notebook to record your study. We’ll dip our hearts into the word of God and read our Bibles.

To participate in this online small group Bible study for women, you’ll need to have:

Most likely you have these items, so you have no excuse for not participating in this simple study. If you’re hesitant, then start the study with a notebook to journal your thoughts-you have nothing to lose. If you enjoy the study, then dig deeper when you use the workbook and listen to the audio or video lessons by Anne Graham Lotz.

If you are new to Bible study, this is an excellent study for you. You will not be introduced to the author’s interpretation of the Bible or specific applications of the Bible, you’re simply reading and learning to understand the words of scripture. There is very little reading in this study, as we walk through the pages of scripture a verse or two each day. There is much to gain from this study as you develop a daily habit of reading your Bible and listening to the word of God.

The online Bible Cafe is a convenient study for women around the world and in any circumstance. If you are a Mom caring for a child in a hospital, this is a perfect study for you because the schedule is flexible to your needs. If you are a Grandma babysitting your six grandkids during the day, caring for your husband at night and feeling little time for Bible reading, this is a perfect study for you. If you’re busy working long hours at a job and unable to participate in a church study, or too tired after work to meet in small group, this is the right study for you. If you are a college student away from church and home, then connect with other women in this online study and stay connected to God. If you’re a new Mom feeding your child with midnight buffets, then join us from the comfort of your home computer.

You’re invited to get your Bible, a notebook and a pencil and join us in the study of Pursuing More of Jesus. Come back tomorrow or subscribe to the email feed and you’ll see where this study leads you in your walk of faith.

Blessings,

”Christine”
