Still Room for Hope: A Survivor’s Story of Sexual Assault, Forgiveness, and Freedom By Alisa Kaplan is filled with passion, courage and confidence. The writing style resembles the boldness of Christine Caine, with a strong message and determination. From the first page to the end, I was completely captivated by the book and the testimony of this survivor. This is a beautiful story of beauty from the ashes.
The book is an eyewitness account of sexual abuse, from the survivor’s view. It reveals her surrounding environment and relationships- from the rapists, family members, media, legal system, community and friends. It’s raw and revealing to the deepest depths of pain.
Woven into the story is the relationship with Jesus- although the faith encounter does not occur until two-thirds into the book. It’s an effective tool for bringing the reader into the suffering and prodigal experience, showing how she overcomes the darkness inside her heart.
The book is very encouraging for survivors, family and friends of men, women and children who’ve been raped. It’s based on a national news story and reveals the media inaccuracies and injustices against victims, while rapists are rarely punished for their crimes. As a survivor and sexual abuse advocate, the author has included many statistics and useful information related to the abuse.
It’s time for society to wake up to the realities of sexual abuse, the survivor stories and the injustices of the legal system. This book is highly recommended!
