In Raising a Princess, John Croyle, founder of the Big Oak organization that has helped raise more than 1900 children, gives practical advice and Biblical wisdom about raising daughters. He uses Proverbs 31 as a guide to teaching our daughters 9 essential virtues: Praiseworthiness, Righteousness, Initiative, Nurture, Character, Empowerment, Servant-Heartedness, and Stability.
Despite the tutu-wearing, wand-carrying princess on the cover, the book isn’t at all about filling our daughters with dreams of the Disney Princess life. He focuses on helping them be strong, independent, kind and confident. He writes mostly to dads with a clear and concise style that might appeal to that audience, but moms can certainly enjoy and benefit from Croyle’s wisdom also. His writing is so down-to-earth, so easy to read, and the book moves very quickly from chapter to chapter.
As a mom to three daughters, I wasn’t surprised by anything he shared, but I was encouraged and inspired. It was wonderful to read of the many “success stories”from his experience at the Big Oak Girls’ Ranch when children from backgrounds of abuse and neglect are given a place to heal. He concludes the book with an epilogue that essentially says, “It’s not too late.” For those looking for Biblical advice and practical ideas about raising daughters to be godly women who can fulfill God’s design for them, this is a great place to start.
