NIV Ragamuffin Bible: Meditations For the Bedraggled, Beat-up and Brokenhearted is a collection of lifetime work from Brennan Manning. Published by Zondervan, this new Bible is published in the New International Version (NIV) translation. This is not a study Bible or application Bible; rather the format is devotional. The words of Brennan Manning are highlighted inside text boxes and include devotions. quotes and reflections. It would be helpful to include a reference to the author’s work inside these text boxes. For example, on page 666 is the quote “The impostor demands to be noticed. His craving for compliments energizes his futile quest for carnal satisfaction. His bandages are his identity. Appearances are everything.” The quote is nestled near Psalm 91 and there is no footnote beside the text or on the bottom of the page. There is a list of acknowledgements in the back of the book, organized by books of the Bible rather than page number. I did not find the source for the quote, though I made a thorough search. In spite of this small technicality, the NIV Ragamuffin Bible: Meditations For the Bedraggled, Beat-up and Brokenhearted is a good basic Bible. It does not have the timelines, maps, charts, references and supporting documentation that is included in a study Bible. For devotional use, this would be an adequate Bible. It is not something I would recommend for Bible study or seminary school.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze/Zondervan book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
