Nearing Home, Book Review

Nearing Home: Life, Faith, and Finishing Well
by Billy Graham

Billy Graham’s book, Nearing Home, reminded me of the day my mom and I sat across from my great-grandmother at a huge kitchen table and “interviewed” her.  It was more intense than a normal visit, although we visited often and walked in her gardens or explored her home.  My mom said we needed to hear her story before she wasn’t there to tell it any more.  So, we asked her what life was like before cars and computers and then we really listened to nearinghome2what she had to say.  I still remember the stories she told us that day.

This book feels like sitting across the table from your grandfather or great-grandfather and sipping your cup of tea while he tells you what he’s learned and experienced in his long life.  It’s a precious conversation of valuable wisdom and insight from a trusted source.

The book is practical for those considering retirement or preparing estate plans or even grieving the loss of a spouse.  But for me, a barely 30-year-old mom with young kids, the book taught me about leaving a legacy, making life count, living with wisdom, and obeying God in the here and now of life, as well as valuing the input of the elders in my own acquaintance.

Don’t pass up this book just because you think it’s for the seniors in your church congregation or it’s irrelevant to your fast-paced modern life.  This may be your only opportunity to listen to Billy Graham reflect on life and no one should miss out on that.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. • Heather, I really liked this book too! It gave me a different perspective for my 91 year old father-in-law and also my frail grandmother. What a blessing that Billy Graham reflects on his life and shares wisdom for the generation that follows him.
