Welcome back to the Bible Cafe as we discuss Esther by Beth Moore. We’ve just completed our online Bible study. When you started this study nine weeks ago did you realize the time would pass so quickly? I’m amazed at how Bible study has become a spiritual discipline and enjoy each day that I spend with my Bible. It’s the second time I’ve done this study and the first time I completed it with my small group at church. I still remember the day my group leader brought plastic Princess crowns and asked us to wear them the entire day. We ended our church meeting with a buffet lunch as we watched the movie One Night With the King. I hope you’ll watch it yourself soon…and if you make Haman’s Ears…let me know how they taste!

The theme of this study has been “Its tough being a woman” and a reversal or turn around. Beth Moore touched on these key points in the audio sessions:

  1. It’s tough being a woman…in another woman’s shadow
  2. It’s tough being a woman…in a world where beauty is a treatment
  3. It’s tough being a woman…in a man’s world
  4. It’s tough being a woman…thrown a giant size weight
  5. It’s tough being a woman…in the tight fist of fear
  6. It’s tough being a woman…who can balance passion with patience
  7. It’s tough being a woman…who feels responsible for the “how”

Like Esther, we’re overshadowed, underrated, overwrought, under qualified, under attack, overanxious and over responsible! Ladies, it’s tough!!! And Beth Moore teaches us, “our trust reverses the detours of adversity into the highways of destiny.”

Write these key scripture verses on an index card or smart phone app, and memorize one each week. Ground yourself in TRUTH.

  • 2 Peter 2:9
  • Psalm 103:14
  • Isaiah 30:18
  • Deut 33:29
  • Nehemiah 4:14
  • Isaiah 49:16
  • 1 Peter 5:7
  • Deut 23:5
  • 1 Tim 1:18, 19
  • Eccl 3:11
  • Psalm 91:1

Thank you for joining me each week for these small group discussions.  Let’s finish with praise reports and prayer requests. Do you have something to share? Post your comment below!

Discussion Questions- Discuss with your small group or post a comment below

  1. On the first day of vengeance 500 men were killed and on the second day 300 more. Was Esther right or wrong in her insistence of a 2nd day of vengeance? What are your thoughts on retributive violence? (page 204)
  2. The Jews did not commemorate the battle; they celebrated their rest from their enemies. Can you think of a few reasons why this mentality might be healthy? (page 206)
  3. What does this verse say to you personally (Psalm 16:5 ESV): The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; You hold my lot. (page 208)
  4. Complete this sentence: You turned my wailing into dancing, you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with ________.  (page 210)
  5. Have you ever been profoundly humbled by a sacrificial gift that someone gave to you? If so, describe the situation. (page 212)
  6. Create a one sentence synopsis of the Book of Esther by completing this phrase: The Book of Esther is about…. (page 213)

    4. Complete this sentence: You turned my wailing into dancing, you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with ________. (page 210) everything
    6. Create a one sentence synopsis of the Book of Esther by completing this phrase: The Book of Esther is about…. (page 213) Caring, learning, and beauty
    7. Would you recommend this study to a friend? Why or why not? Yes I would recommend this study. I have totally, truly enjoyed reading about Esther. It has taught me to look for beauty in someone, not on appearances alone. I have enjoyed all that Esther has to offer, she was totally tuff and brave woman. She was raised to be polite, kind, and considerate.

The book of Esther is about God’s providence and reversal of destiny. When our way seems hopeless, He can turn it around and bring about amazing restoration. The book is so full of hope and encouragement!

I led a small group in my home, and several of the ladies were senior saints, and also very Godly women. I think I learned as much or more from them than I did from the study. This is one of my favorite Bible studies that I have ever participated in.

I made Hamaan’s ears for our last session, and they turned out very well. However, I used raspberry preserves for half of them, and they were too sweet. The first one tasted wonderful, but eating a second one was almost sickening. I also used peach preserves, and they were delicious! The women really liked them. We also watched Beth Moore’s video of her visit to the Holy Land for Purim at the beginning of the session. It was a lot of fun to learn about the tradition. Afterward the final session, one of the ladies treated us all to Chinese buffet. She was way too generous, but it was such a wonderful time of fellowship. I just wanted to share how we celebrated our conclusion of the study. I loved every bit of the last nine weeks!

Would you recommend this study to a friend? Why or why not?

Absolutely and have recommended this ministry to many, I only know of one who joined. All I can do is extend the invitation and leave the rest to the Holy Spirit.
I invited others for several reasons, I hear people saying they need to do more bible study, or they need to read the bible more, so when i hear statements like that the next words from my mouth is SOMETHING about WBC (smile).

WBC answered a prayer I started during the 2010 lent season, “Lord help me focus more on Your Word” the prayer was more fervent in 2012 and here I am. Our study time at WBC is great because its individual study which moves you to corporate chat which become praise moments.

Praise you finished along with many other sisters whether at the same time or not!
Praise that in doing this God was glorified!
Praise for storing God’s Word in our hearts, you will smile once you realize what you have learned!
Praise that my eyes are open to see your miracles.
    Praise and Glory to God…..always
