Surrendering the Secret Online Bible Study

At the Women’s Bible Cafe, we’re taking a huge step and leading an online bible study for healing after abortion. We’ll be using the popular book Surrendering the Secret: Healing the Heartbreak of Abortion by Pat Layton. There is a learner version and a leader version, make sure you have the learner version of the book to complete the lessons.

You’ll read the book at home, a chapter each week. You’ll want some quiet time and a quiet space to complete your journal lessons without interruption. Once a week we’ll meet to discuss a theme and chapter from the book. Your participation in the group discussions is optional and based on your comfort level. You can also send private emails to Christine or a Surrendering the Secret certified leader, if you prefer to discuss the book in private.

If you or a friend are still hurting after an abortion, or you helped someone to get an abortion, then please consider joining us in this bible study. We’re a no-shame zone and respect the heart of every woman who participates here. While men are welcome to participate, the online study here at the Womens Bible Cafe is mostly feminine in nature.

Join a local group by visiting www.surrenderingthesecret.com or participate online with the Womens Bible Cafe.

Special Note: We’ve created an anonymous email address for use during this bible study. If you don’t want to reveal your true identity, please use the anon email address when you post a comment. Use a nickname instead of your real name. Please use the same nickname throughout the study so we can reply back and grow as a community.  Register with the email biblecafe16@gmail.com if you want to remain anonymous and keep your comments confidential.

About the book Surrendering the Secret

This is a personal study experience helping hurting women find the path to healing through honest, interactive Bible study; meaningful group experiences; unique journaling exercises; and confidential, caring community. Many women hide the secret of abortion deep in their hearts and they are suffering severe consequences. They carry a great burden of shame and failure, afraid to reveal their hidden pain, and by doing so are forced to endure the long-lasting effects in isolation. Surrendering the Secret will allow women to release this burden and find freedom through ‘redemptive community’ while experiencing hope and joy, as shame and failure are replaced with beauty.

Author Pat Layton, founder and president of A Woman’s Place Ministries, helps women find the path to healing through honest interactive Bible study, meaningful group experiences, and caring community. With more than 20 years of experience in guiding women to healing, Pat outlines a process that has proven effective over and over again.

This will be an 8-week journey into healing. For many it will bring comfort and relief, and for some it might unleash hurt and pain. If you struggle with the subject and study, we prayerfully request you to seek professional counseling. Many post-abortion women have experienced symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or depression and a counselor will assist you in these medical conditions.

Prayerfully consider if this is the right time for you to participate in this bible study.

I am a nurse and volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center. I’ve not had an abortion, and do not judge those who have. My desire is to learn more about what drives the decision leading to abortion, the long term effects, and what might have changed the minds of women who’ve had one. I also would love to be a part of the healing God will surely do here. Bless you ladies for having the courage to “Surrender the Secret” I know it takes enormous strength. You are loved and forgiveness is yours.

Joining this group late but am a little, how do I say this, scared! Thought I had worked through some stuff in my past but it’s became clear to me recently….I have a long way to go. Is there really is an end, on earth anyway, and final healing to these secrets I’ve held?? I’m hoping God will make it so.

    • Welcome to the study Lori. • Mindy says:

    Standing on my own…alone

    • God places people in your life so His work can be done through them. When you stand alone you miss the opportunity for letting others serve in Jesus name. Standing alone could mean that you’re too ashamed to face the past, that you are blaming yourself and hurting yourself, or that your pain is too big to burden others. I encourage you to seek help with your healing- Please allow someone from STS to stand beside you and minister to your heart. Call Carrie or a counselor. I’m praying for you and I’m here for you. You are loved.

  • Jill says:

    Phoenix, AZ

Why didn’t I look to you sooner.

  • Mary says:

    How can anyone love me

    • God loves you…and so do many others. When you are in bondage to past pain it’s difficult to accept the love of others and to love yourself. You are loved Mary. Don’t let the enemy steal your identity as a child of God and keep you from enjoying the fruits of the Spirit. Healing is available to you…open your hand and accept it….

  • Vicci says:

I just viewed the above video. Ladies, she is right. Surrender your secret to Jesus. He already knows about it and He wants you to come to Him and it won’t be easy going through it, but there is His light at the end of the tunnel. I know about it because I have been through it. Jesus is your only HOPE to true freedom!! These leaders all have compassion, grace, mercy and love in their hearts for you or they would not be doing what they are getting ready to do. Women who have healing already through Jesus about their abortion(s) have a special kind of love in them. The statistics are true. One in three women have had an abortion. For every 20 seconds that passes by every day, a child dies from abortion. But you can have TRUE HEALING THROUGH JESUS. I cannot stress that enough. It took me seven long suffering years to come to grips with what I had done-murdered my child-I agreed with God about what I had done. Then God picked me up and went on a journey with me through a post-abortion Bible study (fall of 1990) and I still to this day have bonds with many women because we have one thing in common-abortion. They are strong bonds that will never be broken. There is safety here and love here. Run into Jesus’ arms!! 🙂

  • Pat Layton says:

Hi ladies! I will be thrilled to join you when I can!!

I am finishing a trade version of the study now. What should I call it?
    Blessings to you all,
    Pat

My story would be Redeemed by God’s Grace and Mercy.

  • Jeremiah 29:11 says:

I’m looking forward to this study and anxious to see where the Lord leads me. My story would probably be named-His Grace and Mercy Abound!

  • Nonni says:

My learner’s guide came today. I’m ready to start this study and get healed!

  • CRK says:

My friend sent me an e-mail about a Night of Hope in Tulsa, OK, next week, and I was researching about the STS Bible study, found your site, and saw the online study. Perfect timing! I am heading out the door right now to LifeWay to purchase my learner’s book and looking forward to this study.

After I went through my abortion at 16, I wrote about the experience and titled it “Wishes and Hopes and Dreams and Onlys.” If I were to write a book now, I would title it “Wishes and Hopes and Dreams and Onlys: The Grown-Up Version.”

  • Lelia Chealey says:

Hey Christine…this is awesome. I’m a STS leader and have blogged many times on my own experience. If you ever want a guest blogger, I’d be more than happy to help you. I did on-line blog studies for over a year and this was one I did with Pat’s assistant Jennifer. Very life changing. Will be praying for you and all who participate. Such a journey…from shame and pain to freedom and trust.
    Blessings,
    Lelia

  • Shaqita says:

I can’t wait to receive my book and start this study group. My title will be My Jjourney and I.

  • Sarah says:

You have no idea what perfect timing this is!

My book title would be Roller Coaster for One

  • RC says:

I have to say I was excited to see this study being offered. There are so many women who suffer in silent because of a choice that was made. It is encouraging that we can come here and not only get healing but be able to talk about it, sometimes for the first time. I had an abortion about 24 years ago and I have been through a study similar to this one and even though I know I have received healing I feel as if God isn’t done with me yet. The title of my book would be “Trust and Transparency” the more I trust in Him the more transparent that I can be.

  • Mary Margaret Gibson says:

Dear Christine and all, we will be praying for all of you who take Surrendering the Secret. We’ll pray you will be strengthened by the Lord so you can complete your course. We will pray that since He will be so obviously there for you, no matter where you are, that you will know, for certain, that He is healing and helping so that you can live a life of purpose, love, and wholeness.

  • Casey says:

i can’t wait to join this study. I would title my book Lost in Love. I Love to do things for the Lord and his kingdom but I am always Lost as to the big picture and knowing for sure that I am living right for Him.

  • Nonni says:

Just ordered my workbook…hope I have it in time for the study when it starts!

  • Nicolie says:

I am excited to see you guys offering this study! I actually bought this book a few months back but never did the study. It seems as though God brings things to my attention repeatedly until I realize he’s asking me to do something about it. So, I plan to do this study, finish it, and partcipate fully. I had an abortion 17 years ago this coming weekend. I have received some healing in this area of my life, but I know that there is always more work for God to do in my heart. The title of my book is “Wanting More”- I want more of God’s truth, more healing, and more of God himself.

  • marie says:

I believe God may have brought me here. I have had two abortions and the reason behind them is ugly. I have been forgiven by God, I asked and he answered. I am trying to move on and live this life he has for me. Satan continues to attack me daily. The book title of my life would be Trying to make it.

  • Ashley says:

My name is Ashley. I am from Maryland. I was browsing the website this evening just to see what some of the upcoming studies were and was not expecting to see this one. I have been living with the guilt of having an abortion for 10 years. I think about it almost every day. I have asked God’s forgiveness numerous times and every day despite my past mistake try to be the best Mom I can be to my 3 year old son and second son that will be arriving in May. I believe that God has forgiven me for having an abortion when I was 16 but for some reason cannot seem to completely forgive myself. The idea of participating in this study scares me greatly but I am certain that it is something that I need to do. I have been blessed immensely in this life with an amazing husband, son and another on the way. I thank God every day for the endless blessings he gives me. I want to find a way to move on from my past and be able to truly enjoy this life I have been given. If I wrote a book about my life it would be titled, Undeserved Blessings.

    • Nicolie says:

      Ashley,
I just wanted to say that I can totally relate to thinking about my abortion every day. I did too until I found the first class I went through, similar to this one. I can also relate to wanting to be the best mom to my kids. It was hard in the beginning because I felt like a failure as a mom because of my abortion. Sorta like starting out behind, before even getting started. I look forward to doing this study and hope that God’s Word gives you peace and a relief from the guilt you are carrying.

  • Missy says:

As soon as I saw this study featured on the site I knew immediately that I wanted to be a part of it. I’ve been hiding this secret for 10 years, never fully facing it/healing from it. Thank you so much. I’m from California. The title of my book would be “The Struggle to Be Secure”

  • Mary says:

Hi my name is Mary..I’m from Birmingham Alabama originally from Sw lower Michigan. If I could write my life story I would title it.. Bee Stories…..glimpses of Honeysuckle and Stinkweeds (or something like that lol)
For such a Thyme as this…surrendering the secret.
    Isaiah 61:1-3
    Beauty from Ashes

  • TK says:

Wow, God and His perfect timing? Amazing! I will pray about doing this study. Thank you for this opportunity. The title of my life would probably be “Deception”

  • What a beautiful, courageous group of women! How precious you are to the Father!
I’m honored that Christine chose to use my STS promo video to share the truths of what this study can mean in your life. As i said in that video – i would LOVE to connect you with a group near you! We have groups that meet all over the U.S. and in 7 other countries. There is such strength and encouragement being a part of the group….with women filled with compassion. We are meant to do life & this journey together! (Ecc 4:9-10) I get emails and calls from across the nation from women seeking to be connected with a group and I can assure you that it is completely confidential!
God will walk this journey with you through the tough and the tender times…taking you to the top of the mountain until you can stand in freedom! Rev 12;11 says: They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb (THANK you Jesus!) and by the word of their testimony (that’s YOU!), for they did not love their lives in the face of death.” That makes me think of Esther – “for such a time as this…and if I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:14,16) Esther was willing to do the tough things in order to see God deliver both the lives of her people and herself. You have made that same decision – to embark on this journey, allowing God to heal the heartbreak of your abortion – to choose to walk in the truth of the Word, rejecting the lies of the enemies – no matter what it takes. I pray that you will choose to take the :”bandaid” off your heart and allow God to heal it from the inside out. The beginning is always the hardest part of the climb, but when you get to the top of the mountain, standing forgiven, restored & free….OH, what a beautiful lush valley you will see below. God WILL do that for you! Please feel free to contact me – just let me know you’re one of my Cafe sisters

  • Shannon says:

I am so excited to be able to join this study!
If my life were a book title it would be called “The Rollercoaster”

  • Sue Alice says:

Oh, at times, I feel as if you can read my mind. No need to hide my name, the ONE who already knows has known for 42 years, since 1970. The pain is still here now after all these years. I am like Michelle, my mom had me get a adortion my senior year in high school, and I to have been in fear of judgment. My name is Sue Alice, and the title of the book about my life would be. “Deception” Thanks for doing this and having the courage to do so.

  • Liz says:

I am from Washington, DC but go to college in West Virginia. Title of the book of my life would be “Discovering the true woman in you”

  • Terri says:

  • Michelle says:

This is something I’ve had on my heart for a while and have suffered in silence for 25 years my parents forced me to have an abortion when I was 15 I am turning 40 this year and although God has blessed my with 4 beautiful children I still feel the guilt & shame from it and not being able to tell people for fear of judgment. If I wrote a book about my life I would title it More Than A Conqueror based on everything God has brought me through. I look forward to healing from this pain I carry.

    • Sue Alice says:

      Michelle,

Thanks for your post. I have been hiding this shame for 40 years. Thank you for stepping up. Blessings to you.

  • PS No need to hide my name here. I have my story online and I have seen God use it to help others.

  • Thank you for setting up this online Bible Study group. A friend emailed me about it and I had to come over and make a comment to say, “bravo!”

I love the truths found in Surrender the Secret. I love the videos for added perspective. I love Pat Layton as a friend as well. We’ve met in person last year and I attended her Surrender the Secret all day leadership workshop here in Colorado Springs. Pat is precious. Her story is a huge blessing to many, including me.

This abortion secret is one that God wants to free women from. It’s past time.. Life and freedom await for all who are willing to face their fears and their past in order to move forward.

A note of encouragement for anyone who is unsure or afraid:

God will be there for you every step of the way. He is faithful. He will comfort you as you process week after week. God will carry you through these 8 weeks and bring you out a new woman. Free!

PS I also love the study, Forgiven and Set Free. I am currently co-leading a group in my home through that book. I’ve completed and co-led both books. They are both powerful and healing, filled with God’s truth. I highly recommend either Bible study for anyone who has had an abortion.

I’m believing for God to move BIG in this group.

You have my blessings and prayers,

    Tiffany

  • Vicci says:

This is a subject not to be taken lightly. I had an abortion in 1983 and by the blood of Jesus, I have been cleansed from it. I went through an intense post-abortion bible study in 1991 through a licensed pregnancy/adoption agency in Memphis, Tennessee. It takes time to work through this intense issue. Once a woman realizes what she has done, there are sooooo many different emotions that surface and she is really going to need help. I worked through a lot with God on my own, but a post-abortion bible study helped even more. I eventually became a leader of one of these groups and saw numerous women become free of this sin. Please work with the women involved in this study. It is going to stir up a lot of hurtful emotions, but I think y’all already know this. God bless you in your endeavor to set women free through Jesus Christ. A lot of women come to know Jesus through this sin. I know I did and am very thankful for what He did for me!! Blessings, Vicci Mauldin 🙂 Please do not hide my name. I am very open about this sin in my life.

I believe this study is an answer to my prayers. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. The title for my life would be Secretly Petrified.
