Welcome to the Bible Cafe!
Today we begin our Summer Bible Study of the book “Me, Myself and Lies: A Thought Closet Makeover” by Jennifer Rothschild.
Go to Beth Moore blog to see the Mini Session Video.
Homework Week 1 in Workbook (pages 7-30)
Optional: Listen to the Introduction Session -You can download this for $4.99 at Lifeway!
Week 1 is about discovering what’s inside our thought closets.
- Day 1 is about life words and death words in our though closets
- Day 2 is about human thought closets
- Day 3 is about the soundtrack in you thought closet
- Day 4 is about worry and meditation, “what if” vs “what is”
- Day 5 is about knowing what is true
After reading the Day 1 lesson, answer the question below:
Are you surprised by your answer?
Verses for Today
Lord, I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14 NIV
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 1 Corintians 15:10 NIV
Group Discussion
Beth Moore asks us to discuss: What breed of dog do you most represent in demeanor and why? If you don’t know your dog breed, describe your demeanor to the group and let them decide. We’ve done this with our favorite cafe drinks, and the purpose is to invite discussion and encourage you to post blog comments.
Group Prayer: Using this prayer, take the name of someone in the group study and say the prayer using their name. Pray for each other!
Let the words of ___________’s mouth,
and the meditations o _____________’s heart,
be acceptable in thy sight,
O Lord, ___________________’s strength,
and __________________’s redeemer.
Psalm 19:14 KJV
It’s Your Turn
When you discover something new or amazing, have a question,or need a prayer, post a COMMENT in the Bible Cafe. I will update and change this post during the week, to simplify the study. Check back to the same page during the week and see what we’re talking about!

Hmmm…. I don’t know what breed of dog describes me. I am relatively laid back, but I am quick to be defensive if criticized and am prone to being a bit melancholy. I am prone to anger and am just a bit (okay a lot) impatient.
Have enjoyed the study for today. I did it first thing this morning, and have already thought of it a lot.
I wasn’t really surprised by my answer in the vote, but am surprised that I don’t feel as harshly as I used to about myself. This Bible Study is just what I need to get me on track to continuing (we are all a work in progress aren’t we) to work on cleaning up my thoughts.
I’ll be praying for you other gals.
I’m praying for each of you in the study.
I love dogs so this one is easy for me. My daughters insisted we buy two Shitz Tsu dogs and they are NOT like me. They sleep all day and pee on the walls!
I’m like a Yorkie Terrier, dressing in fashion accessories and never sitting still. I’m always exploring things, moving around, curious, creative and loyal to my family. I’m queen of the house!
I am without a doubt a Dachshund. I am extremely loyal, but also stubborn at times. I’m very intelligent, but love to make others laugh, so I can be rather goofy when I want to be. I desire attention, but give it in return always. I’m extremely affectionate and Totally protective of those I love.
God Bless
I am definitely a Boston Terrier. I love being with family, love snuggling and laying on the couch and I love to play outside for short periods of time. I don’t like hot weather and I love taking naps – just like Bostons!
Greetings Ladies,
I happened on this Bible study today and saw your comment on The LPM blog inviting solos to join your group. Do you have room for one more? I’d be honored to be part of your group.
I’m not sure about what breed of dog, but the one that keeps coming to mind is a Labrador: loyal and friendly to everyone, yet protective.
I look forward to getting to know you and learn more about myself in the process.
Blessings, SusanD
Can we not do the intro page unless we buy the download? I was wanting to fill it in as I hate blank spots like that. I am doing day one right now and will be posting about it in the morning if that is ok.
I would say I am a heinz 55 (aka MUTT)…as hard as someone tries they just can not figure me out…I may resemble a bit of this and a bit of that – but there is such a mixture no ones for sure! (although I am quite sure there is no Shitz Tsu in the mix – I am pretty much alert during the day and never peed on any walls!)
I am a cat….I just couldn’t think of a dog that I am like. Cats pick their owners, I pick God. They are independent but loving, I have no trouble relying on God and I try to always make sure that everyone else is cared for. Cats are self sufficient (you can leave them for a few days with no sitter), I can take care of myself. Cats Purr….I have been learning not to bark.
I was actually surprised by my thesaurus. It wasn’t as negative as I thought it would be. The Lord has really been working in me to stop tearing myself down. It is nice to see the improvement on paper.
Beth also asked us to do a short prayer request…..
Please pray for me, I struggle with sarcasm directed at my teenagers.
I love the pondering point… “Who I am and what I struggle with are not the same thing!!” What important words to remember.
I agree with Theresa about the pondering point. “Who I am and what I struggle with are not the same thing!!” Too often I think that a certain struggle defines me.
I think I most resemble my dog which is a yorkie terrier and maltese mix. I’m yippee and quick to snap at those I love. I’m protective of my house, friends, and family. My bark is bigger than my bite. I’m actually very sensitive and worry about everything. I haven’t received my workbook yet, so I’ll be a little behind at first…but I will catch up. When I ordered the book 3 weeks ago, I wasn’t told it was back ordered =(
I still don’t have my book yet…it should come any day now. Can’t wait. But I will answer the question that Beth wanted us to answer. I was reading other people’s responses and was surprised to read Lanie’s. Her description of herself would be me!
This is what she wrote and it fits me: Hmmm…. I don’t know what breed of dog describes me. I am relatively laid back, but I am quick to be defensive if criticized and am prone to being a bit melancholy. I am prone to anger and am just a bit (okay a lot) impatient.
I wasn’t sure about they type of dog breed that would describe me, but after reading some of your descriptions, I would have to agree with Tabitha about the Dachshund – loyal & stubborn – and also with Cathey about the Boston Terrier – love being with family, being outside for short periods of time, I HATE hot weather (why do I live in Mississippi???) and I definitely love to take naps, although with 2 little ones, they don’t happen very often!
I just completed day 1 of the study and I also agree with Theresa and Lanie about the pondering point – great thing to think about!
Well I’m a cat person but I’ve always loved maltese’s. Like them, I guess, I love my long hair, I can be a yapper if you get me going! But like all dogs I love to get outside and just run around and play and be active! I didn’t think I had that bad of a thought closet but when she gave examples I started to realize how much I do that! Now I realize why I’ve been led to this study! Here we go….!
Debbie & Kerry,
If you still have not received your book you can print off the first weeks homework from Jennifer’s site (jennroth.typepad.com) and watch the first week’s video for FREE!
Hey wonderful women. This is Jennifer’s Dr. Phil. For clarification we have a free download of week one memberbook, not week one video. Shucks. Wish we did have it. Nevertheless, don’t forget you can download a free mp3 file of the song Let the Words found at http://www.jenniferrothschild.com/words. You can find all links you need at http://www.javawithjennifer.com So excited you and doing Jennifer’s study. We are following along when we can. Bless you ladies. Jennifer’s Dr. Phil
Laine describes me as well, worry about everything, hate to be criticized, am impatient, can be a hermit or super outgoing and playing around and being goofy and talking away. I think I am a shih tzu sorry Christine that yours are soo laid back as mine have been and are loving, goof ball and generally loyal to their select few vip buddies and play by themselves happy at home., plus I love that they care so much about their hair but also look and act like ewaks. What I am learning from what Beth Moores conference and this bible study are teaching me is to believe what God says about me and not these horrible thoughts that plague me or make me impatient.
mmm…the dog question isn’t easy for me but I would guess and say that I am a terrier of some sort. Yappy around others (what can I say? I lke to talk!!), smallish, and lovable (hopefully!) to those around me!
I was 50/50 on my thesaurus…some were critical words and some were positive.
This is going to be fun and really helpful!
Hi Susan, we have room for anyone who wants to join this study. Please email me your introduction and I’ll post it on the Introduction page. Welcome!
Hi Nicole, you can do this study without the Session downloads. The answers to the audio sessions (aka blank lines) are available from the Lifeway website for free. Here’s the link for the session answers:
